Abstract

A door jam (1) comprises a base member (11) for mounting on the side of a door (9) and an extendible leg member (13) pivotally mounted on the base member. The leg member is movable from a storage state, in which the leg member is retracted and lies adjacent the door, to an in-use state in which the leg under member extends angularly away from the door for engagement with the floor.

Description

The present invention relates to a door jam.
According to the present invention there is provided a door jam comprising a base member for mounting on the side of a door and an extendible leg member pivotally mounted on said base member, said leg member being movable from a storage state, in which the leg member is retracted and lies adjacent the door, to an in-use state in which said leg member extends angularly away from the door for engagement with the floor.
Preferably, the leg member includes means to allow the leg member to retract from a fully extended state when the door is closed in the in-use state to a less extended state to allow the door to open slightly.
Further preferably, the leg member includes means to compensate for a change in angle between the door and the leg member when the leg is in the in-use state.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door jam according to the invention in a storage state; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the door jam of Figure 1 of the drawings in an in-use state; Figure 3 is a side elevation of the door jam of ______ Figure 2; SECTION 28 AND RULE 23 Figure 4 is a detailed front elevation of the door jam according to the invention; Figure 5 is a detailed side elevation of the door jam of Figure 2; Figure 6 is a detailed side elevation of a foot of the door jam according to the invention; Figure 7 is a detailed side elevation of a hub of the door jam according to the invention; and Figure 8 is a rear perspective view of a hub of a door jam according to the invention.
Referring now to the drawings wherein similar numerals have been used to indicate like parts, there is shown a door jam generally indicated at 10 according to the invention. The door jam 10 comprises a semi-circular hub 11, having side walls 12 and a rectangular base plate 22, Figure 7. A segment shaped recess 23 is removed from the hub 11 between the side walls 12 and the base plate 22. The hub ll is fixed by screws (not shown) and adhesive to a door 9 such that the semi-circular side walls 12 lie on a vertical plane and the recess opening 24 faces downwards.
Before the door jam 10 is fixed to the door 9, a telescopic leg 13 is inserted into the recess 23. A dowel pin 25 passes through the end of the leg 13 and the leg 13 is located in the hub 11 from the rear allowing the ends of the pin 25 pass through a pair of downwardly sloping slots 32 removed from the hub 11 on either side of the recess 23, Figure 8. The end wall 26 of the recess 23 splays outwards, Figure 7. This allows the telescopic leg 13 to pivot from a position where it lies adjacent the door 9, shown in solid lines, through an angle β to a position where it abuts a side wall 31 of the recess 23 remote from the door 9, shown in dashed lines, Figure 3.
The telescopic leg 13 is urged into the position where it lies adjacent the door 9 by a spring 32 located in a receptacle 33 formed in the side wall 31.
The telescopic leg 13 comprises two legs 13', 13 made from hollow rectangular section. The first leg 13', is inserted into the hub 11, and the second leg 13 slides over the free end 17 of the first leg 13'.
In a storage state, the leg 13 lies adjacent the door 9, Figure 1. Before opening the door 9 to allow an individual entry, the door jam 10 is deployed to an in-use state by pivoting the leg 13 away from the door 9 and pulling the leg 13 downwards so that it extends to the floor, Figure 2.
The free end 17 of the leg 13' tapers between its side 18 adjacent the door 9 and its side 19 remote from the door 9, Figure 5. When in use the leg 13 tends to retract with the leg 13 sliding upwardly along the leg 13' when the door 9 opens.
The leg 13 is prevented from retracting fully in the in-use state by a mechanism which employs a spring biased retractable pin 15 protruding from the side 19 and a slot 16 removed from the corresponding side of the leg 13, Figure 5.
When assembling the leg 13, the leg 13 is pushed over the leg 13' so that the slot 16 lies between the pin 15 and the hub 11. During assembly, the slot 16 passes over the pin 15 and the pin 15 extends into the slot and so must be manually pressed into the leg 13* to allow the leg 13 to pass over the leg 13' into the storage state. In the storage state, the pin 15 presses against the inside of the leg 13 and holds the leg 13 against the leg 13'.
When the door jam 10 is initially deployed into the in-use state, the leg 13 is extended to the floor 9 so that the pin 15 bears against the upper end 20 of the slot 16. The door 9 may then be opened until the pin 15 bears against the lower side 21 of the slot 16. Thus, the door 9 may only be opened slightly to enable an individual inside a room to identify an individual wishing to gain entry. The door 9 may then closed and the door jam 10 returned to the storage state before opening the door 9 fully to allow entry.
A rubber stop 14 is inserted in the end of the leg 13 remote from the hub 11, Figure 6. The underside 28 of the stop 14 slopes at an angle a equal to the angle β. A plurality of grooves 29 running parallel to plane of the door 9 are removed from the underside 28 of the stop 14. The grooves 29 are triangular in section, their sides 30 nearest the door 9 being parallel to the plane of the door 9 when in the storage state. In-use, substantially all of the surface of the underside 28 of the stop 14 bears against the floor and when the door 9 is opened slightly, the grooves 29 deform to compensate for a slight change in the angle β, Figure 3.
If the door 9 is forced, the telescopic leg 13 will bear against the end wall 26 of the recess 23 and the rubber stop 14 will be forced into the floor. This prevents any change in the state of the door jam 10 and ensures that the door may not be fully opened.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments described herein which may be modified or varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
