Abstract

A drinks dispenser comprises a dispensing device 6 and a housing 30, the housing comprising a threaded inlet opening 32, into which a mounting stem 8 of the dispensing device may be screwed. In a drinks dispenser of a first type, a receptor is secured within the hollow stem 8 of the dispensing device, to which a supply pipe 48 may be connected, whilst in a dispenser of a second type, the supply pipe is connected to a receptor carried by the housing. In accordance with the invention, an adaptor 40 is utilised, adapted to be screwed into housing 30, and in turn adapted to carry the threaded stem of dispensing device 6, the adaptor providing means 50 to enable the supply pipe to be connected thereto. In this manner the dispensing device of a dispenser of the second type may be mounted on the housing of a dispenser of the first type.

Description

j I This invention is concerned with improvements relating to drinks dispensers, particularly of the kind (hereinafter referred to as being of the kind specified) comprising a housing, support means to support the housing, and a dispensing device mounted on the housing,in use extending to the housing, a supply pipe by which liquid from a remote source is supplied to the dispensing device.
The invention has been devised in connection with drinks dispensers designed for dispensing drinks in public houses, restaurants and other similar establishments, comprising a plurality of housings arranged side by side at an elevated position, whereby a plurality of different beverages may be dispensed from a single unit.
Conventionally the dispensing device comprises a body, a manually operable valve member, and a screw threaded mounting portion by which the device is secured to the housing, the mounting portion comprising an externally threaded hollow stem screwed into a receiving aperture of the housing.
In one type of drinks dispenser of the kind specified, hereinafter referred to as being of the first type, a receptor is secured within the hollow stem, to which the supply pipe is connected, the pipe being connected at its remote end to the source of liquid. Whilst such dispensers are utilised wholly satisfactorily to dispense many types of liquid, certain liquids, in particular certain types of stout, utilise dispensers of a second type, in which the supply pipe is connected to a receptor carried by the housing, liquid flowing through the receiving aperture of the housing and into the hollow stem of the dispensing device, and currently these are incompatible with the conventional dispenser of the first type. ^922917 Thus dispensers devices of dispensers of the second type are currently located in a different position, and not only does this prevent the advantageous situation, of having all drinks dispensed from a single unit, but also the conventional location for a dispenser of the second kind is on the edge of a bar or counter, and such a location has the problem, that the dispensing of liquid into a receptacle is not visible to the purchaser.
According to this invention there is provided an adaptor to enable the dispensing device of drinks dispenser of the second type to be mounted on the housing of a dispenser of the first type, the adaptor comprising a mounting portion comprising an externally threaded hollow stem adapted to be screwed into the receiving aperture of the housing, a receptor, to which a supply pipe may be connected, being secured within the hollow stem, and a receiving portion on which the dispensing device may be mounted.
The receiving portion may be afforded by a hollow stem, internally threaded, into which a mounting stem having an external thread of the dispensing device may be screwed.
The adaptor may comprise a body manufactured by a convenient process from a suitable material, such as machined or die-stamped from brass.
The receptor may be screwed into the hollow stem of the adaptor, in the same manner as the receptor is conventionally secured into the hollow stem of the original dispensing device (i.e. of the first type). Preferably however the adaptor comprises a sleeve member to which the receptor is secured in such a manner that the sub-assembly of sleeve and receptor are retained captive within the adaptor.
Preferably the sleeve is provided, preferably on the side thereof remote from the receptor, with a formation adapted to be engaged by the hollow stem of the dispensing device, preferably in a relatively liquid-tight manner. Thus, where the receptor is of plastics material, and the sleeve is of a contaminant-free metal such as stainless steel, engagement between the stem of the dispensing device and the sleeve ensures the absence of any contact of the liquid being dispensed with the material of the housing.
According to this invention there is also provided a drinks dispenser of the kind specified, comprising a housing of the first type, a dispensing device of the second type, and an adaptor carried by the housing and which in turn carries the dispensing device, the adaptor carrying means by which a supply pipe may be connected to the dispenser.
There will now be given a detailed description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, of an adaptor which is a preferred embodiment of this invention, having been selected for the purposes of illustrating the invention by way of example, the adaptor forming part of a drinks dispenser which is also illustrative of the invention in certain of its aspects.
In the accompanying drawings:FIGURE 1 is a schematic vertical sectional view showing the drinks dispenser which is the preferred embodiment of the invention; and FIGURE 2 is an enlarged view of part of Figure 1, illustrative adaptor in more detail.
The drinks dispenser which is the preferred embodiment of this invention comprises dispensing device conventionally used in a dispenser of the second type, generally indicated by the numeral 6, comprising a mounting stem 8 having an external thread 10, provided in a flat front face 12 thereof with an inlet aperture 14, the aperture 14 extending to an intermediate head 16. A transfer passage 18 extends from the intermediate head 16 to a dispensing head 20, comprising an outlet nozzle 22, and a dispensing member 24, a screw-threaded adjustment member 26 being provided to adjust the consistency of the liquid being dispensed from the outlet 22.
Such a dispensing device is conventionally utilised for dispensing certain types of stout, in particular Guinness (RTM), The drinks dispenser also comprises a housing 30, of the kind conventionally used in a dispenser of the first type, comprising a threaded inlet opening 32, into which the threaded stem of a conventional dispensing device would be screwed, and through which the supply pipe would pass, to be secured to the mounting stem of the dispensing device. However in the preferred embodiment an adaptor 40 is utilised, comprising a body 42 machined or diestamped from brass, comprising a mounting portion 44, having an external screwthread adapted to be screwed into the threaded bore 32, into which a receptor 46 is secured, the receptor being of conventional design, commonly referred to as a Guest fitting, and into which a connection pipe 48 may be press-fitted.
The receptor 46 is screwed into a sleeve member 50, of stainless steel, the receptor and sleeve member being located primarily on either side of an annular shoulder 53 of the housing.
The housing 42 is also provided with a receiving portion 56, having an internal thread similar to the threading of the receiving aperture 32, into which the stem 8 of the dispensing device 6 may be screwed. As the stem 8 enters the receiving portion 56, a flanged head 51 of the sleeve 50 enters the passage 14 of the stem 8, the flange engaging the face 12 in tight engagement. In this manner through flow of liquid to be dispensed from the remote supply through the pipe 48, through the internal passage of the receptor and the internal passage 52 of the sleeve direct into the passage 14 ensures the absence of contamination with the constituent of the adaptor 40.
In this manner a dispensing device of the second kind may readily be fitted to the housing of a drinks dispenser of the kind specified, enabling in particular drinks such as Guinness to be dispensed from the conventional drinks dispensing font without any undue additional expense. In particular the adaptor of the present invention allows the more complicated Guinness dispenser to be utilised in place of the simpler conventional cap, and allows dispensing easily to be carried out at height where it is readily visible to the customer.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in the terms or means for performing the desired function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
