Abstract

A plastic-sheathed glass sheet, in particular as a window for motor vehicles, in which the sheathing comprises PVC, rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer and is allocated a polyurethane adhesive layer which serves to bond the glass sheet in its housing and can be provided with a second polyurethane adhesive layer for fixing the sheet at its intended location, should be formed so that a perfect connection to the housing can be achieved in spite of the use of an inexpensive PVC layer for the sheathing or a layer comprising another inexpensive material. In addition, it is provided according to the invention that the polyurethane adhesive layer is applied to the sheathing surface facing the housing, the polyurethane layer being of low thickness.

Description

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION Patent Application by GUMMI-HENNIGES GmbH & Co. KG, a German company of Hildesheimer Strasse 410, D-3000 Hannover 89, Germany.
JSC251191 a PLASTIC COATED GLASS PLATE The invention relates to a plastic-coated glass plate, in particular a window for motor vehicles, having a coating of PVC, rubber or a thermo-plastic elastomer sprayed thereon. The coating is associated with an adhesive layer of polyurethane serving for the adhesion of the glass plate in its housing, and is provided with a second adhesive layer of polyurethane for fixing the plate in its intended location, thereby establishing its connection to the body of a motor vehicle.
The invention further relates to a process of manufacturing a glass plate with a coating sprayed there around in this manner.
Known glass plates of this type normally require the additional application of a polyurethane coating, as the PVC layer alone is, as a rule, unsuitable for connecting to the housing. This arises due to its separation of softeners which therefore require additional sealing or special priming respectively. The adhesive layers of polyurethane are arranged close along the sprayed-around PVC coating.
It is, therefore, an object of the invention to arrange a glass plate of the previously described type, so that a perfect connection to the housing is achieved, in spite of using a relatively cheap PVC coating for spraying-on or a coating of another aforementioned cheap material.
Thereby, the disadvantages of the known arrangement are avoided, ie the need to use a relatively thick and thus expensive polyurethane adhesive layer.
JSC251191 2 The above object is achieved according to a first aspect of the invention in that the adhesive coating of polyurethane is applied to the coated surface facing towards the housing, and whereby the polyurethane layer is of minimal thickness.
It is achieved by means of this arrangement that, apart from the cost savings due to the thin polyurethane coating, the existing PVC coating sprayed around the plate can be used as a spacer relative to the housing.
The coating therefore forms the actual support of the glass plate, rather than serving as a connector, as is the case in the known arrangement having a thick polyurethane coating.
For this reason, the adhesive layer of polyurethane is not applied, along with the PVC coating, onto the glass as in the known arrangement, but on the PVC coating layer itself. The use of an adhesive layer of polyurethane remains cost-effective in the inventive arrangement due to its minimal thickness.
It is a further advantage that, despite using this thin polyurethane layer, the actual location and fixing into the housing, for example a vehicle body, can be achieved by a further polyurethane strip, which is to be applied to the first polyurethane layer and can be kept relatively thin as well, as the largest portion of its thickness is replaced by the PVC coating.
The known arrangement has the further disadvantage that the polyurethane layer reduces the field of vision of the window, to a considerable extent and independent of the respective conditions. This is because layers of this type are often up to 15 mm thick.
In addition to the aforementioned advantages, the inventive arrangement also offers the possibility of JSC251191 3 delivering plates of this type as pre-fabricated windows. As polyurethane layers of known dimensions can easily be applied to the thin, pre-applied and delivered polyurethane layer, the plates may be formed away from the application site.
The polyurethane layer can also be applied in certain thicknesses in the form of a paste, so that a very thin layer with a thickness of less than 0.5 mm is produced. It is even possible to apply the polyurethane layer in the form of a thin liquid such as a polyurethane lacquer, thus producing a layer of even lesser thickness.
Furthermore, the invention also allows for the second coating, which establishes the connection between the polyurethane coating and the housing, to be applied in a thin liquid form, preferably in the form of a lacquer.
The invention will be described further and in more detail, with reference to the exemplary embodiments shown in the accompanying drawing in which:20 Fig. 1 Fig. 2 » Fig. 3 is a schematic illustration of a glass plate having a plastic-material coating sprayed around for use as a window for a motor vehicle body and to which the invention is applied; is a cross-section along II-II of Fig. 1 to an enlarged scale; is a cross-section generally similar to Fig. 2 of a second embodiment of the invention.
According to Fig. 1, a glass plate 1 is provided with a plastic-material coating 2, by means of which it is to be glued into a respective cut-out in a motor vehicle body 3.
JSC251191 4 Fig. 2 is a cross-section II-II at an enlarged scale to clarify the arrangement. The plastic-material 2 for example PVC is peripherally spray applied around the glass plate 1 in the area of its edge la. In the arrangement as shown in Fig. 2, it is glued to the surface of a motor vehicle body section 3 facing towards it by means of a thin polyurethane layer 4. As shown in Fig. 2, the polyurethane layer 4 is kept very thin, so that the major portion of the gap A between the glass plate 1 and the housing 3 is filled by a sprayed around PVC coating 2. The aforedescribed problems of glueing the PVC layer 2 to the housing wall 3 are overcome, as the polyurethane layer 4 is relatively easily glued thereto.
Additionally, the polyurethane layer 4 in the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 can be kept relatively thin so that it could even be applied in the form of a paste.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section generally similar to Fig. 2 and illustrates a form of embodiment wherein a polyurethane layer 5 is used, which is even thinner than the embodiment for Fig. 2, and which is preferably applied to the PVC coating 2 in liquid form, if appropriate in the form of a polyurethane lacquer. Prefabricated in this manner, the sprayed-around glass plate 1 can then be delivered to the user, for example an automobile manufacturer, who can glue the sprayedaround window into the vehicle body in the simple manner by applying a second, again thin and, if appropriate, liquid polyurethane coating 6.
The same applies respectively to other areas of application.
