Abstract
ABSTRACT The sealing agent for waterproof barriers in the form of a clay and cement suspension made of polymineral clays, characterized by the fact that it contains 3—15% parts by weight of cement, up to 65% parts by weight of fly-ash and/or rock dust of similar granulation, and 30-60% parts by weight, or better up to 50% parts by weight, of water suspension of clay, heavy or loamy.
Description
Introduction The invention relates to a cill insulating system for use in construction of facades for buildings.
One of the problems with building facade systems is to maintain thermal insulation at window and/or door heads and cills at the base of a wall. Conventionally, the cill joint is sealed by a metal flashing which is mechanically fixed to the structural steel frame of the building. This causes a cold bridge through the wall which can cause condensation to form within the building and excessive heat loss.
Another problem is that conventional cill insulators often do not efficiently integrate with the building system in which they are used.
This invention is directed towards providing a cill insulator system which will address these problems.
Statements of Invention According to the invention there is provided an insulating element for a cill, the insulating element comprising a main support section and a fixing section extending from the main support section, the insulating element having reinforcing means for reinforcing the fixing section of the insulating element, wherein the fixing section has a guide to locate a fixing element.
In one embodiment the reinforcing means comprises internal bracing. In one case the fixing section comprises a front wall and a rear wall and the internal bracing comprises internal wall means extending between the front wall and the rear wall of the fixing section. The internal wall means may comprise oppositely directed diagonally extending bracing walls.
The guide may comprise a groove or recess in the front wall.
In another embodiment the fixing section has a locator means to locate a panel. In one case the locator means comprises a lip projecting from the fixing section of the insulating element. The locator lip may project upwardly from the fixing section of the insulating element. In one case the locator lip subtends an acute angle with a top wall of the fixing section of the insulating element. In one embodiment the locator lip is spaced inboard of a rear face of the fixing section to define a receiving groove.
In one embodiment of the invention the main support section comprises means for supporting a cill flashing, the insulating element providing a thermal break between a cill flashing and the inside of a building.
In one embodiment the main support section comprises means for supporting a soffit flashing.
The main support section may comprise spacing means between the cill flashing support means and the soffit flashing support means.
Preferably the insulating element is a single piece. The element may be moulded from a plastics material, especially polyvinylchloride (pvc) which is preferably black uv stabilised impact resistant pvc.
The invention also provides a building system including at least one insulating element of the invention.
The invention fiirther provides a system comprising an insulating element of the invention and a panel bearer clip for fixing to the fixing section of the insulating element.
In one embodiment the system further comprises a fixing for fixing the panel bearer clip.
The system may also comprise a panel for mounting to the fixing section of the insulating element. The panel may have a projection for locating in a recess or groove defined by the fixing section of the insulating element. The panel may be a facade panel.
Brief Description of the Drawings The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description thereof given by way of example only, in which‘:- Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view of a cill thermal breaking element of the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of detail A of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of portion of a rafi foundations system incorporating the thermal breaking element of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of portion of the system of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of portion of a louvre head and cill levolux system incorporating the thermal breaking element of Fig. l; and Fig.6 is an enlarged view of portion of the system of Fig. 5.
Detailed Description Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a cill insulating element 1 according to the invention. The insulating element 1 is in this case of one piece extruded construction, extruded from uv stabilized impact resistant polyvinylchloride. The cill insulating element 1 has a main support section 2 and a fixing section 3 which extends from the main section 2. The main section 2 has an upper face 5 which provides means for supporting a cill flashing 10, and a lower face 6 which provides means for supporting a soffit flashing or seal ll. A spacing section 7 is provided between the upper and lower faces 5, 6.
The fixing section 3 comprises a front wall 30, a rear wall 31 and a top wall 32. The fixing section has reinforcing means comprising internal bracing walls 8 which are oppositely directed and extend from the front wall 30 to the rear wall 31 of the fixing section 3. A front face 9 of the front wall 30 has a guide means in the form of a groove 15 to ensure accurate positioning of a fixing screw 16 in the braced void.
The fixing section 3: also has a locator means to locate a panel, in this case a facade panel 20.
The locator means comprises a top lip 17 which projects from the top wall 32 of the fixing section 3. The lip 17 subtends an acute angle B which, in this case is about 82 degrees, with the top wall of the fixing section 3. The lip 17 is spaced inboard of the rear face 3] of the fixing section 3 to define a receiving groove 35 into which a projecting part 36 of the panel sits, on assembly. Thus the insulating element interfaces with the panel 20 and giving the option to form a seal. The panel 20 may, for example be a Kingspan Firesafe (trademark) facade panel. The lip 17 also takes the weight of the panel 20 close to the plane of the support structure minimizing force moments. The lip 17 also assists in restraining the bottom of the panel 20 during wind suction. The bracing 8 prevents crushing due to excess fixing screw tightening and also prevents racking resulting from vertical forces applied to a panel bearer clip 21.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate one example of the use of the invention. In this case a facade panel 20 is shown over a conventional brick wall. The wall provides a soffit detail and a seal ll is used between the insulator and a damp course membrane 22. A panel bracket 21 is mechanically fixed using a fixing 16 to the metal frame through the insulator component. The fastening I6 is located using the guide groove 15. No extra fastenings are required to fix the insulator to the steel frame. The sloping upper face 5 provides the necessary fall for rain run off on cill flashing . The combination of the panel bracket 21 and lip 17 provide the correct profile to support the facade panel 20 and providing locations to form a seal.
Figures 5 and 6 illustrate another example of the use of the invention. In this case a facade panel is shown over at typical window feature. The configuration is similar to that described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 except that a soffit flashing 11 is used. The soffit flashing I] is attached to the lower face 6 of the main section 2. In this instance extra insulation 23 is used in the area created by the spacing section 7.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in detail within the scope of the claims.
