Abstract

A method and apparatus for detecting wear of a rotatable bit used to drill a wellbore are disclosed. In drilling operations, a drilling fluid is pumped down through a drill stem and is discharged through ports (14) in the drill bit (12) and into the annulus between the drill stem and the wellbore. Excessive wear of the bit (12) at a selected location is detected by a sensor (24) which is linked (28) to a restrictive device (30) capable of reducing the flow of drilling fluid through at least one port (14). To detect excessive wear of the bit (12), at least one abradable sensor (24) is located in the bit (12) at a selected location. As the drill bit (12) wears at that location, the sensor (24) abrades until finally it is activated. Activation of the sensor (24) is transmitted by a communication device such as a wire (28) or hydraulic fluid to manipulate the restricting device (30). More than one sensor may be simultaneously linked to the restricting device with communication devices to detect wear of the drill bit at differing locations. <IMAGE> [GB2157342A]
