Description

This invention concerns an arrangement for feeding positions of glued tape for bookbinders on a continuous paper strip for tabulating machines.
It Is known that bookbinders on continuous strips for tabulating machines known at present contain, downstream of the arrangement for feeding the binding positions in» the form of glued tape, a toothed crown wheel or sprocket wheel for introducing the previous binding point into a hole corresponding to the perforation provided on the edge of different prints superimposed on the strip and a pair of gearwheels of the printed strip, the lower wheel having the supplementary function of folding and fixing the said previous part of the binding position on the lower page of the print situated below.
These known continuous printed strips also provide the feed of positions of glued tape perpendicularly to the direction of movement of the printed strip and withdrawing the positions of the continuous tape of a width equal to the length of the positions, by means of a rectangular blade witn alternating vertical movement. The particular structure, the operating cycle and the means of control adopted in these known continuous printed strips involve a great limitation of the speed of the blade and the regular application of positions and due to this fact impose a serious limitation on the speed of movement of printed strips to be bound and thus on production.
It is also known from European Patent No 054.009 that there is a strip for continuous printing in which the glued tape is fed in the direction of movement of the printed strip and has a width equal to that of the positions, is cut and Chen torn to form the bookbinding positions by means of two pressers rotating in opposition, one being associated with a punch and the other with a notch; but such a binder has the disadvantage of requiring tne use of a glued strip which is not commonly 3old.
The aim of this invention is to eliminate the disadvantages fr of the previous bookbinders by providing an arrangement of feeding bookbinding positions wnich permits the use of a normal commercial glued tape and which, at the same time permits a feed speed, precision and reliability of cutting positions superior to those obtained up to now. This result has been attained according to this invention by producing an errsngesrent for feeding positions of glued tape consisting of a pair of wheels for pulling the glued tape in a direction perpendicular to that of movement of the printed strip to be connected and with intermittent movement obtained by means of a system of ratchets associated with a cosmodronic cam, a head turning vertically with at least one eccentric blade and a corresponding presser to achieve the cutting of the glued strip by withdrawing one bookbinding position and thus to fix the rear part of the said position on the upper strip, which in lifting the printed strip produces a counter-pressure, means for obtaining the rotation of the said head in synchronism with the movement of the printed strip to be connected, and means to obtain the lifting of the counter-pressure in synchronism with the rotation of the head.
According to the invention, it is advantageous to guide the glued tape near the said turning head by means of a passage in the shape of a funnel and where the lower outlet edge plays the part of a counter-blade during cutting of the tape.
Also, according to the invention, the said counter-pressure wheel is mounted at the free end of a lever and the latter is Lifted by means of a turning cam in synchronism with the said turning head. r According to other characteristics, the turning head contains two eccentric blades, diametrically opposed and consequently the cosmodronic cam is profiled in such a way as to produce two equal angular movements of the ratchet spindle in synchronism with each turn of the said head and in the same way, the cam which controls the lifting of the lever carrying the counterpressure wheel has two active eccentricities.
The solution proposed by this invention enables one to achieve bookbinding at great speed, easy regulation and also permits one to modify the speed of bookbinding positions by a simple modification of the head.
These advantages and characteristics of the invention and others are more or leas understood by every expert in view of the following description and with the aid of the attached drawings given as practical examples of the invention, but which are not to be considered in the sense of limitations; drawings of which Fig 1 represents the schematic front view of a bookbinder for continuous printed strip provided with an arrangement for feeding position to be bound according to the invention. Fig 2 represents the view along line A-A of Fig 1; Fig 3 represents the view along line B-B of Fig 1; and Fig 4 represents a detailed front view, partly sectioned,'of the bookbinder of Fig 1.
With reference to Figs 1, 2 and 3 of the attached drawings and limited to its essential structure, tne arrangement according to the invention is intended for a bookbinder 1 with positions of glued tape for continuous strips for tabulating machines.
These include downstream of the feed arrangement 2 of binding positions, a toothed crown wheel 4 for introducing the previous part of each cut position 3 into a hole corresponding to the 3Q perforation provided at the edge of the superimposed printed strip and a pair of wheels 6,6'turning in opposite directions and intended for pulling fche interposed printed strip. The Lower wheel 6' also provides the fixing of the said previous part of each binding point to the lower page of print situated below.
With reference to Fig 4 of the attached drawings, the wheel 6’ is moved by a driving shaft 7 via a train of gears containing toothed wheels 8 to 13 and having a transmission ratio equal ato one.
The arrangement 2 for feeding positions of glued tape itself consists of a pair of wheels 1¾. 14s turning around axes parallel to the direction of movement of the printed strip 5? to move the interposed glued tape 16 from a bobbin 18, and whose free end passes across a slit 29; a head 21 turning vertically in the direction of movement of the strip 5 and in synchronism with the latter and whose movement is obtained from the driving shaft 7 via another train of gears having a transmission ratio equal to one. and consisting of toothed wheels 8, 9 and 22 to 27. This head 21 is eccentric and contains an angled blade 28 and a corresponding dorsal part 28' with a circular profile, concentric with the head, on each rotation of the said head, the blade 28 touches the slit 29. cutting the part of the glued tape 16 which passes.
The said part 3 of the tape, which is several mm thick (for example four mm) and defines the width of the binding position, is determined by the intermittent rotation of the wheel 14 obtained by means of a ratchet wheel 33. 34, 35 associated with a cosmodronic cam 3θ and in which the sawtooth wheel 34 is mounted on the spindle 36 of wheel 14 and the balancer which is idling on spindle 36 carries a pivot 32 on one side engaging on track 31 of the cosmodronic cam 3θ and on the other side it carries the ratchet 35 which works together with the sawtooth wheel 345 A lever 36 articulated in 36 is controlled to oscillate vertically and in synchronism with the head 21, by means of a cam 37 mounted on the spindle of the toothed wheel 22 in such a way that the rubber wheel 39, idling at the free end of lever 36 lifts the printed tape 5 towards and against the dorsal part 28* of the head 21, achieving the counter-pressure necessary for the previous part of the position 3 on the strip situated above the free end of the said lever 36 is best operated by a return spring 40 in the rest position.
The functioning of the bookbinder for successive operations is that of any bookbinder known at present and is already described above.
To obtain a bookbinder step of half the normal step (of four inches), it is sufficient to replace the head 21 with one eccentricity by a head with two eccentricities and thus with two blades 28 and two corresponding pressers 28s diametrically opposed to carry out two cuts of the glued tape, whose feed is then modified by the substitution for the cosmodronic cam 3θ of another cam whose groove 31 has two raised parts in such a way as to cause two corresponding rotations of the spindle 36 for each turn of the head and the substitution of the cam by another having two eccentricities of the opposite raised part 38 to permit the lifting of the wheel 39 twice in each rotation.
