Abstract
Degreasing of metals, in particular of light alloys. Propylene oxide, acetone and tetrahydrofuran are added to the methylene chloride.
Description
Th© present invention relates to a composition based on methylene chloride and to its use for degreasing metals.
Owing to their dissolving power, their non5 flammability, and their relatively low boiling point, chlorinated hydrocarbons ax© most often used for th© degreasing of metals, textiles,'ceramics and glasses.
Methylene chloride is particularly resistant to oxidation, hydrolysis and pyrolysis. It does not par19 ticipate in any photochemical reaction. Its low boiling point enables it to be used at low temperature- All these properties thus make it a solvent of choice In th© degreasing of metals.
However, during this operation, it may react with aromatic compounds introduced during the processing of light metals.
By a reaction mechanism (of th® Friedel-Crafts type), hydrochloric acid and heavier compounds, which contaminate th© methylene chloride, are subsequently 2Q formed. Accordingly, there is an explosion risk due to decomposition (formation of acid chloride, phosgene, hydrogen chloride gas).
In order to reduce these difficulties, it is .necessary to add to the methylene chloride small amounts of organic products which prevest this reactions this produces stabilisationCompositions of stabilised methylene chloride have already been proposed- OS Patent 3,887,628 describes methylene chloride containing 0-05 to 2 % of butylene oxide and propylene oxide. US Patent 3,923,912 describes methylene chloride containing 0.05 to 2 % of acetone or metal ethyl ketone and, If desired, propylene oxide. OS Patent 4,108,910 describes methylene chloride containing an epoxide and an aliphatic monoether. European Patent EP 11,658 describes methylene chloride stabilised with ethyl formate or methyl formateOS Patent OS-A-S,860,665 describes a composition containing metnylene chloride and 0-05 to 2 % by weight (relative to th© weight of methylene chloride) of tetrahydrofuran and propylene oxide. However, the compositions containing two stabilisers are not always satisfactory in the various steps of the BAM test.
Accordingly, one aim of the invent ion is to propose a composition useful for degreasing metals, which composition is stable in the presence of light metals, such as aluminium or alloys thereof.
Th© composition according to the invention, which is based on methylene chloride and useful for degreasing metals, contains at least one stabiliser. It is characterised In that it contains, as stabilisers: (a) propylene oxide or butylene oxide, (b) acetone, and (c) tetrahydrofuran, each of the compounds (a), (b) and (c) representing between 0.05 and 5 % by weight of the total weight of the composition.
Preferably, the amount of each of the stabilisers (a), (b) and (c) represent between 0.2 and 2 % by weight of the total weight of the composition.
Th® composition according to the invention is prepared by simply mixing the products with methylene chloride. This mixing can take place at ambient temperature and more particularly between 5 and 30 "CThe present invention also relates to a process for degreasing metals by means of the composition according to the Invention.. Degreasing can take place In the vapour phase or liquid phase isy conventional 'procedures.
A composition of the formula: (in % by weight) - methylene chloride 98 - propylene oxide 0.5 - acetone 1 - tetrahydrofuran 0.5 is prepared.
This composition passes the BAM test (Bundesanstalt fur material prufung (sic) (Federal Institute of Material Testing], German Federal Republic). follows: - 3 As is known, the 4 steps of the BAH test are as 1) 100 ml of toluene» 0»7 g of A1C13 and 18 g of aluminium flakes are added to 100 ml of composition. The mixture is refluxed for 18 hours in a water bath at 58*C, 2) 1 g of zinc stearate ar® added to mixture 1)# which is then refluxed for X8 hours, 3) 10 ml of oleic acid are added to mixture 1),.,, which is then refluxed for 18 hours, 4) 300 al of composition are distilled to give 3 fractions of 100 ml, followed by carrying out test 1) with each of the 3 fractions.
A formulation is accepted by 3AM if it does not show any reaction over the course of these experiments. r, o j, 6 β ΟΜΙ£
