Description

- 1 - 54959 The invention relates to & method for weatherproofing and in particular to a method for sealing a joint between a closure member and its corresponding frame.
The term "closure member" as used in the specification 5 includes any barrier used for closing an aperture in a building, for example, a door or window mounted in a corresponding frame. The window or door may be hinged to the frame for opening or may slide relative the frame.
Kith the increased cost and impending shortage of fuel it 10 is essential that remaining fuel reserves should be used as efficiently as possible. It is important therefore, to ensure that the desired temperature in a building be maintained as efficiently and cheaply as possible. One way to increase this efficiency is to try and seal the joint 15 between closure members such as doors or windows and their corresponding frames. Attempts have been made to seal these joints, vrith, for example, self adhesive sealing strips of sponge-like material. These known strips are not particularly successful as they do not exclude draughts 20 efficiently, particularly in the case of bent or warped frames and/or closure members. In addition, these strips - 2 - 54959 are expensive particularly for large windows and doors and do not have a long life m use, are unsightly, and after a short time in use, generally become dirty.
Accordingly, there is a need for a method of sealing a 5 joint between a closure member and a corresponding frame which will overcome at least some of these disadvantages.
The invention is directed towards providing such a method.
According to the invention there is provided a method of sealing a joint between a closure member arid its 10 corresponding frame comprising the steps of opening the closure member, applying a deformable quick setting room temperature vulcanisable silicone polymer sealant material to one of the closure member or frame, 15 applying a liquid anti-adhesive material to retain the sealant material on one of the closure member or frame to which it is applied, closing the closure member to compress the sealant material to fill the joint, 20 leaving the closure member closed until the 54959 - 3 - sealant has cured, and opening the closure member.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the sealing material is applied to one of the closure member or frame.
Usually the anti-adhesive material is applied directly to the Other of the frame and closure member. Alternatively, the anti-adhesive material may be applied over the sealing material .
In or.e embodiment of the invention the frame is a window 10 frame. Typically the closure member is a sliding sash. Alternatively the closure member is a casement hinged to the window frame.
In another embodiment of the invention the frame is a door frame and the closure member is a door.
Usually the anti-adhesive material is a liquid detergent.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: 20 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a window illustrating 5 4 9 5 9 - 4 - the method for sealing a joint, Fig. 2 is a side sectional view of the window of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the window with 5 the joint about to be sealed, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of portion of the window with the joint sealed.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a closure member and its corresponding frame, in this case a 10 casement 1 hinged about a substantially horizontal axis on hinges 2 to a window frame 3.
Outer frame members of the casement 1 and frame 3 are formed with complementary seating faces 4,5 respectively which are intended to bear against one another when the 15 casement is in the closed position. However, the joint between the seating faces 4,5 is generally uneven usually due to warping or buckling of the casement or frame. The invention provides a method and apparatus for sealing the joint between the seating faces 4,5 of the casement 1 and 20 frame 2 by using a deformable sealing material 7 and an anti-adhesive material 8.
In this case the sealing material 7 is a room temperature - 5 - - 5 -5495B vu 1 can i s abl e silicone polymer with additives and is applied to the seating face 5 of the window frame 3 for example from a gun applicator 9. Before the sealant 3 has fully set the anti-adhesive material 8, in this case a 5 liquid detergent is applied, for example by spraying from a plastics squeez.e-to-use container 10 onto the seating face 4 of the casement 1. The casement 1 is then pressed against the window frame 2 to compress the sealant material 7 to fill the joint between the seating faces 4 10 and 5 of the casement 1 and frame 2 respectively. Because the anti-adhesive material 8 prevents the sealant material 7 sticking to the seating face 4 of the casement 1 once the sealant has set the window may be opened as required in the usual manner. If desired the anti-adhesive material 15 can be removed with a damp cloth. Alternatively the anti-adhesive material may be left to soak into the casement 1.
One advantage of the invention is that it provides a quick cheap and efficient way of effectively sealing a joint between a frame and closure to prevent draughts and hence 20 decrease heating costs. In addition, the useful life of the window and frame may be significantly extended by preventing ingress of water. These advantages are particularly important in relation to frames and/or closure members which are warped or buckled leaving large 25 gaps causing draughts and ingress of water to further deteriorate the frame and/or closure member. - 6 - - 6 -B4859 Any suitable anti-adhesive material may be employed, for example, a concentrated solution of any suitable detergent may be used.
It is envisaged that in some cases the sealant material 5 may be applied to both seating faces of the frame and closure member. In this case, and indeed in the case when the sealing material is applied to only one of the seating facts the anti-adheslve material may be applied directly over the sealing material.
It wall be appreciated that while the invention haw been described with reference to a hinged casement window it may also be applied to a sliding sash window, door, or other closure member and associated frame. In particular, it may be applied to a sash or door for a hot bed, cold 15 frame, greenhouse or other glazed enclosure. The frame and/or closure member may be of any material such as wood or metal. The sealant material and anti-adhesives used may depend on the material of the frame and closure member.
