Description

The invention relates to a hair-waving appliance comprising a rod-member which is preferably cylindrical and which is held at one end by a grip-handle and contains a beating device, a fuel container for fuel for the heating device, a combustion chamber provided in the rod-member and having a catalytic device, and a valve device interposed between the fuel container and the combustion chamber.
A curling appliance is known (German Patent Specification NO. 1557290) which includes a heating device based on an exothermic catalytic contact reaction and which comprises a_fuel .gontainer having a fuel outlet opening at one end and a closure cap provided at this end, the internal space forming an oxidation or combustion chamber, and the catalytic material for oxidation being provided in the oxidation chamber.
The fuel container and the closure cap are provided with passages for the supply to the oxidation chamber, of gaseous fuel and combustion air from, respectively, the fuel discharge opening and the ambient atmosphere. The closure cap can be adjusted relatively to the fuel container, so as to vary the free flow cross-section of the fuel supply passage and/or the air supply passage, so that the quantity of heat produced by the heating device can be controlled in a simple manner within wide limits.
In another known curling appliance (German Published Application No. 2040003), the fuel supply device is a nozzle provided betwen the fuel container and the combustion chamber, and through which a stream or flow of gaseous fuel is led into the combustion chamber. Such an arrangement of nozzle and fuel container is intended to make the control of the quantity of fuel and oxygen supplied to the combustion chamber extremely uniform and accurately regulated.
Finally, a catalytic heating device is known (U.S.
Patent Specification No. 2997869), in which methanol vapour and air are led to a catalytic device, and in which the combustion gas flows through a tube-like member,at one end of which a rod-member is provided coaxially with the tube-like member and which is provided with a catalytic device, so that the rod-like member is heated when catalytic combustion is set up.
The problem upon which the present invention is based is to provide a hair-care appliance, in particular a curling appliance, which operates independently of the mains supply, which is of compact construction, which has a heat-source which can be controlled within narrow limits, which has a high level of safety in operation and which is ready for operation immediately it is taken up for use.
According to the invention this is achieved by means of a control-lever which is pivotally mounted in the housing of the appliance and having a spring acting on the first arm thereof and a bimetallic temperature-sensing element - 3 52753 engaging the second arm thereof, the first arm being directly connected to the valve-body, whereby the valve-body can be actuated in response to variations in the temperature of the appliance.
Other optional features of the invention are as followssPreferably the means which holds the catalytic device is a coil spring, the first and last turns of which have a substantially greater diameter than the turns lying between them, the larger turns bearing against the inside wall of the cylindrical rod-member and holding the coil spring with the catalytic device wound therein, coaxially with the rod-member.
In order to ensure immediate readiness for use, the ignition device arranged in the cylindrical rod-member in front of the combustion chamber includes a friction-wheel for the flint, which is driven by a rotary ring, the axis of rotation of which latter extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the rod-member or coincides therewith.
Advantageously the axis of rotation of the frictionwheel extends perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the rod-member, the friction-wheel being movable by means of a gear-device comprising a pawl and ratchet, the pawl co-operating with a pusher, the end of which remote from the pawl bears against the ramp of a rotary member which is connected to the rotary ring. in accordance with the invention, the pusher, the small tube which receives the flint and the pin for mounting the friction-wheel and the pawl, are held and guided in a frame which is formed from a single piece of metal and is held nonrotatably in the rod-member.
In order to ensure simple construction of the appliance, the pusher which co-operates with the gear-device and transmits - 4 30 the movement of the rotary ring is bent into 0-shape at its end which is directed away from the gear-device, this bent part of the pusher being guided in a longitudinal opening or slot in the holder-frame, so as to be non-rotable but slidable lengthwise therein, and having its end which engages the pawl bent at a right angle.
In an ignition device which is particularly easy to use, the pusher which co-operates with the gear device and transmits the movement of the rotary ring, forms part of a bush which is mounted so as to be longitudinally slidable and is provided with a ramp or cam which bears against the ramp or cam of a rotary member which is connected to the rotary ring.
In order to make it possible for the process of catalytic combustion to be set up without any waste of the gas discharged from the valve-device, a particular constructional form of the invention, is provided having an electrically operated ignition device which is mounted in the cylindrical rod-member and which can be switched on by means of an operating switch movably mounted at the free end of the cylindrical rod-member, by means of which a filament, preferably a platinum wire, connootocl in the circuit nan be electrically short-circuited.
Advantageously the electric filament is arranged in the immediate vicinity of the catalytic device and the catalytic device is formed of quartz-wool disposed around the combustion tube and coated with a catalytic material, for example platinum. - 5 5S753 Purification of the fuel is achieved by filling the fuel container at least partly with a porous material, for example pieces of foam.
The invention admits of the most varying embodiments. two of these are shown by way of example, in the accompanying drawings. In the drawingssFigs. 1 and 2 show in two different views, longitudinal sections through a hair-waving appliance having a catalytic heating device, Pig. 3 shows a partial longitudinal section through the hair-waving appliance as shown in Fig. 2, on a much larger scale and showing the ignition device.

Fig. 14 shows an ignition device operating with a friction wheel and having bushes sliding on one another which are provided with cams.
The hair-waving appliance according to Figs. 1 to 12 consists of the tube 1, a grip-member 2 connected to the tube 1, the grip-member being filled with combustion gas 3, a closure 4 which closes the grip-member 2 at the rear and has a filler-valve 5, a bush 6 which closes the tube 1 at the front, the ignition device which is held by the bush 6 and is generally designated Z, the burner which is held in the tube 1 by the spring-coils 7,8 and is generally designated B, the combustion chamber designated V, the body-member 47 which is arranged between the tube 1 and the grip-member 2 and upon which the hair-clip 10 and operating button 11 are mounted so as to be pivotable about the bolt 12 and finally the valve 13 and the control device which is generally designated R and consists of the parts 14,15,16,17 and 35.
The ignition device Z which is shown in greater detail in Figs. 3 to 6 consists in particular, of the bush 6, the rotary member 18 mounted in the bush 6 and having a camsurface 19, the support-frame 20, the small tube 21 with spring 22, flint 23 and spigot 24, the friction-wheel 26 which is mounted in the support-frame 20 on the bolt 25 and is provided with a ratchet-gear 27, the ratchet-lever 28 and pawl 48, shown on a larger scale in Fig. 6, the pushrod 29 which is mounted so as to be longitudinally slidable in the support-frame 20, the restoring spring 30 and the rotary knob 31 and cover-plate 32. - 7 53 The control device R which is shown in greater detail in Figs. 7 and 8 consists of the valve-member 13 which is longitudinally displacable relatively to the valve-seat 33, the control-lever 16 which is pivotally mounted on the pin 34, the control-spring 17, the control-rod 15 and controltube 14 for the damping-spring 39 and the valve-plate 40 with pressure-bush 41.
The burner B consists of the burner-tube 42, the two spring-turns of larger diameter 7, 8, the catalytic device 43 which is held between an inner spring 44 and an outer spring 45 and the front conically wound part 46.
The body-member 47 serves on the one hand for holding the tube 1 and, on the other hand, for holding the control device R or for holding the hair-gripping device 10, 11, 12, the body-member 47 itself being fixedly mounted on the gripmember 2. L designates an air-passage through which fresh air can flow into the chamber V.
The device of the invention works as follows: After pivotting of the control-member 35 into the openposition, gas flows out of the grip-member 2 by way of the valve 13, 33 and the burner-tube 42 and through the conically coiled part 46 of the spring 44 into the chamber between the igniter Z and the burner B.
In order to ignite the combustion gas it is merely necessary to turn the knob 31. In its rotation, this knob 31 carries the rotary member 18 with it or causes rotary displacement of this part 18. The push-rod 29 engaging the cam-surface - 8 52753 is displaced in axial movement since one end thereof always follows the movement of the cam-surface 19 by virtue of the pressure of the spring 30. The axial movement of the push-rod 29 causes the ratchet-lever 28, which is turnably mounted on the pin 25, to be pivotted by the bent-over end 53 of the push-rod 29.
The pawl 48 of the ratchet-lever 28 meanwhile engages with the ratchet-gear of the friction wheel 26 and causes movement thereof in the rotary direction on the pin 25. The flint 23 which is located in the small tube 21 under the pressure of the spring 22 now engages the rotating frictionwheel 26 so that sparks are generated which ignite the gasmixture in the chamber between the igniter Z and the burner B. The push-rod 29 is held in the region of the frictionwheel 26 and is guided by the lug 50, and its forward end engages through an opening in the base-portion of the supportframe 20, which is tensioned at 49. The small tube 21 containing the flint is held by the bent lugs 50,51 of the frame 20 and is mounted towards its forward part, in a hole in the frame. 52 designates a plate against which the spring 30 presses and which, in its turn, bears against the U-shaped bent end of the push-rod 29.
After the gas-mixture in the chamber between the igniter Z and the burner has been ignited, catalytic combustion is set up, the gas flowing continuously under the control of the valve 13, 33.
The valve 13 is moved relatively to the valve-seat 33 by the control lever 16, for which purpose the lever 16 is pivotally mounted on the pin 34. The control-lever 16 has the form shown more clearly in Figs. 10 to 12 and its free S2753 end is engaged by the damping-spring 39, the control-spring 17 engaging with its free end in the control-member 35 which is rotatably mounted on the body-member 47 or on the handgrip 2. Pivotting of the control-member 35 causes the control5 spring 17 to be pivoted, since the free end of the controlspring 17 engages in a control-portion 36.
The control-lever 16 is also engaged by a temperature control-device which comprises a control-tube 14 with a control-rod 15 movable therein, the tube 14 and 'rod 15 being 10 fixedly connected together at their forward ends (in the region of the burner B) while the end of the tube 14 adjacent to the handgrip is fixedly connected to the valve-plate 40 by means of a pressure-bush 41 and the end of the control-rod adjacent to the handgrip actuates the control-lever 16 shown in Figs. 10 to 12.
Upon heating of the appliance, the valve 13, 33 is closed while on the other hand it is opened upon cooling. The gas-flow through 13, 33 is limited in the maximum open position of the valve, by a small calibrated hole in the part 33 which ensures that only a relatively small amount of gas passes out. · The control-tube 14 responds actively to the effect of temperature, that is to say it expands considerably, while the control-rod 15 expands to a relatively small extent. The difference in length determines the control-distance, that is to say the distance by which one end of the control-lever is moved. As well as being influenced by the control-rod - 10 S3753 , the movement of the valve 13 relatively to the fixed valve-seat 33 can also be Influenced by the position of the control-member. If the control-member 35 (Fig. 9) is moved into the ON position, then the control-portion 36 moves forwards, that is to say the control damping spring 39 is relieved and the control-spring 17 is pivoted away from the hand-grip 2. If the control-member 35 is pivoted into the CFF position, then the control-spring 17 is tensioned to such an extent, or the control damping spring 39 is tensioned to such an extent, that the valve 13, 33 is in any event, closed in a gastightrmanner.
The embodiment of hair-waving appliance shown in Fig. includes an ignition device Z1 which operates by means of an electric battery 57 which is mounted at the free end 58 of the cylindrical rod-member 56 in the two-part igniterholder. The igniter-holder 64, 65 is provided with wireelements 61,62,63 and contact-members 79,80,90,91 by way of which the ignition current reaches the filament 60 from the battery 57. In order to switch on the electric ignition device, the operating button 59 is pressed, that is to say it is moved in the longitudinal direction of the appliance, against the pressure of the spring 92, until the contactmember 90 touches the contact member 79 or presses firmly against it. The battery-current now flows from the battery 57 by way of the pressure spring, the contact-members 90, 79, 80 and the wire-elements 61, 63 to the filament 60 and by way of the wire-element 62 and the contact-member 91., Upon switching-on of the circuit, the filament 60 now brings the fuel/air mixture flowing into the combustion chamber B' to ignition point so that the catalytic oxidation process is set - 11 53753 up in the catalytic device 77.
The catalytic device 77 consists of a mantle-like structure made of quartz wool coated with platinum, the quartz wool pressed into a mantle-like structure being pushed onto a thin-walled burner tube 78 which is closed at the front, that is to say in the direction towards the ignition device Z', and has a plurality of openings 94, 95 for the release of the combustion gas.
The fuel container 54, which is constructed as a grip10 member, is closed at the rear by means of a plug 96 and is defined at the front end by a valve-member 97. The valvemember 97 is provided with the valve-bore 98 in which the spring-loaded valve-body 55 is mounted so as to be longitudinally displacable. The valve-body is rendered gastight relatively to the valve-bore 98 by means of a sealing ring 99. The rear end of the valve-body 55 is provided with a rubber disc 76 which, in the position shown, closes off the path for the egress of fuel by way of the bore 101 and the valve-jet 102. 75 designates a plug of sintered metal in which the fuel supplied by the wick 74 to the valve-opening 103 is vaporized. 70, 71, 72 and 73 designate pieces of foam material which clean the fuel in the fuel container 54 and convey it to the wick 74 - particularly when the fuel container is only partly full.
The valve-body 55 is urged into the open-position by the spring 104 (that is to say, it is moved to the left so that the combustion gas can escape at 102), when the valvelever 106 which is pivotally mounted on the pin 105 is turned S3753 to the left against the pressure of the spring 109, by means of the control-member 107 co-operating with the control-surface 108 (that is to say the valve-lever 106 is released from its engagement with the control-lever 110). In the open-position of the valve-jet 102, the combustion gas flows through the mixing tube 111 into the combustion tube 78 and thence out through the openings 94, 95 to the catalytic device 93 where it burns without a flame. If the temperature in the combustion chamber B' rises too much, then the control-rod 53 which is connected at 112 to the control-tube 113, is reduced in length to such an extent that the control-lever 51 which is pivotable on the pin 105 is moved to the right, so that the valve-body 55 is displaced into the closed position. As long as the valve-lever 106 remains pivoted to the left, the control mechanism 53, 112, 113, 51 can control freely, the gas escaping from the valve-jet 102. However, in the position shown in the drawing, the control-lever 51 is locked (in its closed position).
The electrically operated ignition device Z* shown in Fig. 3 can be replaced by the friction-wheel ignition device shown in Fig. 14, in which case the latter is mounted at the free end 58 of the rod-member 56. This device consists of the rotary member 85 which is moved by the rotary ring 86 (the end-surface of the member 85 being provided with two noses 84 or cam-surfaces, against which there bears the longitudinally movable sleeve 83 with its noses 82), the gear-device which is operated by the pusher 81 and includes the ratchet 87,88,89 for the friction wheel 93, and the fork 116 which is non-displaceably held on the guide-member 113 by means of the pair of arms 114.
In order to actuate the ignition device of Fig. 14, the rotary ring 86 is turned and this turns the rotary member 85 with it so that the noses 84 slide on the noses 82 of the sleeve 83 which is longitudinally displaceable but non-rotatable.
During the turning movement of the rotary member 85, the sleeve 83 moves in the direction of the arrow A against the pressure of the spring 110 which bears against the fork 116, and thus it moves the pusher 81 with it. The pusher 81, which is fixedly connected with the sleeve 83, now sets the frictionwheel 93 in rotation by way of the gear-device 87,88,89. The arms 114 provided at each side of the spring 110 are part of the guide-member 113 which is fixedly mounted on the rodmember 56.
