Abstract

A handling and/or storage case comprises at least one hinged flap 4 forming an upper portion of a lateral wall, which flap 4 is attached to a fixed portion 2 of the case by cranked hinges 7, pivotally mounted above the fixed portion 2 of said wall. Each hinge preferably includes a pair of spaced, parallel, hinge pins, one engaging the flap 4, the other engaging a fixed portion of the case. On raising the flap 4, projections 8 may be dropped into openings 9 to retain the flap 4 in the raised position.

Description

The invention relates to a handling and/or storage case.
Experience has shown that it is frequently advantageous, if not essential, to be able to gain lateral access to the interior of a case in order to remove some of its contents 5 or to load it with articles or products; this is particularly the case, but not exclusively so, when large dimension cases are involved.
According to the invention we provide a handling and/or storage case of the type which comprises at least one hinged flap forming an upper portion of a lateral wall, in which the flap is attached to a fixed portion of the case by cranked hinges pivotally mounted above a fixed portion of said wall, each cranked hinge including two spaced and parallel hinge pins, one of which engages a socket in the flap adjacent to its lower edge and elongated in a direction transverse to the axis of the hinge pin which engages it, and the other of which engages a fixed portion of the case, the arrangement being such that the flap can pivot frcm a closed position in which it is flush with the remaining portion of the lateral wall, to an open position in which it lies flat against this remaining portion.
Due to the combination of the cranked hinges with an associated system of tenons and mortises, the hinged flap may, in the closed position, engage in the fixed section of the wall, and may, in the open position, be folded down to lie flat against the external face of this fixed section, the transition frcm one of these positions to the other effected by two successive movements, a lifting movement and a pivoting movement.
Naturally, the various elements of this combination may be constructed in various ways. Thus, in one constructional method, each of the two cranked hinges of the flap is terminated by two crank pins, one of which is articulated in the fixed section of the wall and the other of which passes through an elongated hole in the base of the flap. <> -4 The flap may extend over the whole length of the wall concerned, or only over part of it, and a flap may be provided not only on one wall of the case but on several walls.
The invention will be further understood with the aid of the description which follows, with reference to the attached schematic drawing which shows, by way of non-limiting example, one embodiment of this handling and storage case.
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views thereof, with its flap in the closed position and in the open position respectively.
F gures 3, 4 and 5 are end views on a larger scale, with partial vertical section, showing the flap in the open position, in the course of closure, and in the closed position respectively.
In Figures 1 and 2, a case 1, which is preferably made from moulded plastics material, has a longitudinal wall 2 extending over only part of its height, from the bottom of the case upwards. This wall 2, with the two lateral columns 3. defines a lateral opening which is normally closed by a flap 4, the height of which is such that when it is in the closed position, it extends to the upper edge of the case.
This flap 4, which is advantageously formed from a moulded plastics material, is hinged on the inside of the above-mentioned opening defined by the top of * the wall 2 of the case. For this purpose, the flap 4, comprises, level with its lower edge, two lugs 5 each provided vzith a hole or socket 6. By means of these lugs the flag 4 is hinged to the actual case. The flap Divots about two cranked hinges 7, each of which has two parallel hinge pins, of which cue hinge pin provides the articulation axis for the hinge and which engages in an orifice in one of the columns 3 of the case, which orifice acts as a bearing. This hinge pin is designated 7a in Figures 2 to 5. The other hinge pin, designated 7b, passes through the hole 6 in the corresponding lug 5 on the flap 4.
On each of its lateral edges, the flap 4 is provided with a row of tenons, 8. These tenons are designed to co-act with openings 9, in the form of mortises, provided . in the columns 3.
The method cf using the flap 4 of this handling and storage case 4 and its method of operating will be readily appreciated. When the case is in the open position as shown in Figures 2 and 3, its flap 4 is folded back down in the vertical position, parallel to and in contact with the wall 2 of the case; this position is made possible by the fact that the flap 4 is hinged not directly on the wall 2, but indirectly, by means of the two cranked hinges 7.
When the case 1 is to be closed by means of the flap 4, it is only necessary to grasp the flap 4 manually by its lower edge and to rotate it through approximately o ISO , to bring it substantially into the position which can be seen in Figure 4. -6During this angular displacement movement, the flap 4 is deliberately subjected to an upwards displacement movement so that the pins 7b of the two hinges 7 remain in contact with the ends of the holes 6 in the two lugs 5; when the flap 4 reaches the position shown in Figure 4, the two displacement movements are continued in the direction of the arrows 10 and II, that is to say, a lifting movement upwards and an angular displacement movement, so that the flap 4 arrives in a vertical position above the lower fixed section 2 of the wall.
This is made possible since, due to the lifting movement in the direction of the arrow 10, the tenons 8 of the flap 4 penetrate into ths inside of the mortises 9 formed in the columns; when the flap 4 has thus reached the vertical position, it is only necessary to relax the upwards traction on it for the tenons 8 to drop into ir.e mortises 9, thus preventing any accidental opening of the flap 4. The closed position of the flap 4 can be seen in Figures I and 5, the latter showing particularly clearly the co-operatim between the tenons 8 and the mortises 9 which makes accidental opening of the flap 4 impossible.
Obviously, the number of tenons 8 and mortises 9 may be varied, as may their shaping and arrangement.
Moreover, the invention is not limited to the single construction form of the handling and storage case which has been shown and described by way of example; on the contrary, it covers all variations which are within the scope of the appended claims.

Claims (4)

1. A handling and/or storage case of the type which comprises at least one hinged flap forming an upper portion of a lateral wall, in which the flap is attached to a fixed 5 portion of the case by cranked hinges pivotally mounted above a fixed portion of said wall, each cranked hinge including two spaced and parallel hinge pins, one of which engages a socket in the flap adjacent to its lower edge and elongated in a direction transverse to the axis of the 10 hinge pin which engages it, and the other of which engages a fixed portion of the case, the arrangement being such that the flap can pivot from a closed position in which it is flush with the remaining portion of the lateral wall, to an open position in which it lies flat against this 15 remaining portion.
2. A handling and/or storage case according to Claim 1, including a system of mortices and tenons for locking the flap in the closed position.
3. A handling and/or storage case according to Claim 2, 20 wherein each side edge of the flap is provided with tenons adapted to engage corresponding mortices in the fixed position of the case when the flap is in the closed position.
4. A handling and/or storage case substantially as herein described, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
