Abstract
The container for twist drills has a receiving part (14) connected to a base part (10) and a lid part (15) in an articulated manner. At its bottom narrow side, the lid part (15) is provided with a recess (18) by which the lid part (15) can be pivoted by more than 270 DEG about the base part (10) in order to serve as the standing part of the container. A catch (21) on the lid part causes the receiving part to also swing out automatically when the lid part is opened up, so that the twist drills are immediately ready to hand.
Description
The invention concerns a container for drill-bits and the like in which the bits can be readily inserted or removed and are held together as a set according to size. It may also be used for other similar articles, particularly for tools such as for example, files, cutters, tooth drills and so forth, although the assembly thereof in sets according to size is not an invariable feature.
Such containers of known and approved construction consist of a box-like and usually - but not necessarily - rectangular bottom portion, the narrow side of which turned towards the user in the lying-down position is referred to as the “lower narrow side. In the bottom portion is arranged a receiver which occupies part of the rectangular bottom portion and has recesses or apertures to receive the drill bits on an upper face thereof. Both parts are covered by a cover portion and all three parts are relatively pivotal about a pivot which is located in the sidewall of the container near its undersurface. The cover portion is formed with an opening at said lower narrow side which extends the whole width of the bottom portion of the container and is so dimensioned that the cover, which serves as a stand, may be pivoted over more
- 2 47546 than 270°, an edge of the opening parallel to the axis serving as an abutment for the bottom portion. In this way in its open condition, the bottom portion takes up an inclined position with its upwardly arranged open surface giving easy access to the user. The receiver portion may then be pivoted upwards and to the front from the bottom - i.e. in the same sense as the cover portion relative to the bottom portion - so that the drill-bits arranged in the receiver even when lying close together side-by-side, can be easily and comfortably grasped in front and behind with two fingers, and lifted out.
The pivoting outwards of the receiver portion from the bottom portion is effected by means of an opening or aperture provided in the actual bottom, through which the receiver portion can be pressed up out of the bottom portion with the finger from below the bottom portion. In known constructions in which such an opening is not provided in the bottom portion, the pivotal movement must be effected from the front in a rather inconvenient manner.
This disadvantage also applies in the first-mentioned known construction in the case where there is no drill-bit in the region of the opening because the bits which would normally lie there have been either already taken out for use or are completely missing. But even in the most favourable circumstances, a special operation on the receiver portion through the opening in the bottom portion is necessary, which is found to be even more inconvenient when the bottom portion is already in its inclined open position and the opening can only be reached inconveniently.
It is an object of the invention to provide an arrangement which enables the receiver portion to be pivoted upwards automatically on opening up the cover portion.
According to the invention there is provided a container for drill-bits or the like, consisting of a receiver portion for receiving drill-bits or the like in an upstanding position and a bottom and a cover portion, the drill-bits or
- 3 47546 the like being removable from the receiver portion and the receiver portion being disposed between and pivotally connected to each of the bottom and cover portions in the region of one side thereof, the cover portion having in said side region an opening extending over substantially the complete width of the bottom portion, the opening having an edge parallel to the axis of pivoting and being so dimensioned that the cover portion may be pivoted through more than 270° relative to the bottom portion to serve as a stand and said edge of the opening parallel to the axis of pivoting serving as a stop for the bottom portion, wherein at least one transmission means is provided on the cover portion or the receiver portion and the bottom portion has at least one opening which permits movement of the transmission means during relative pivoting of the bottom and cover portions, to cause the receiver portion to pivot relative to the bottom portion.
The arrangement of the transmission means may be carried out in a simple manner by means of an abutment or tongue serving as transmission or drive member projecting from the middle of said side region of the cover portion in which it is pivotally connected to the other portions and which may be a lower narrow side of the cover portion as referred to hereinbefore, into the opening of the cover in the plane of the cover, it then being necessary to provide the opening in the bottom portion at a suitable place in the actual bottom of the bottom portion, said tongue or abutment pressing upwards through this opening against the receiver from below in the same way as was hitherto effected by inserting the fingers to press against the bits lying in the region of the known bottom opening. The arrangement according to the invention has the further advantage that the opening in the bottom portion is covered by the receiver and is therefore on the one hand not visible, while on the other hand the entry of dirt and other foreign matter is prevented.
If larger packages with heavier contents are to be dealt with it may be advantageous to provide, instead of a single central tongue or abutment, two or more abutments arranged symmetrically over the edge of the opening of the
- 4 47546 cover portion and a corresponding number of openings in the bottom portion.
In another possible arrangement of the transmission member, the transmission is provided in inverse manner on the receiver portion on one or both sides thereof, in the form of a pin or pins projecting laterally outwardly of the bottom portion through a corresponding arcuate slot in the adjacent wall of the bottom portion by a distance equal to the wall thickness of the cover portion, the cover portion having in its closed position a corresponding recess which is open from below and which permits final closing or initial opening pivotal movement of the cover without the other two portions being affected. If the cover is now pivoted into its final open or standing position, the front edge of the corresponding side wall of the cover portion comes into contact with the transmission member before it reaches the end position and swings the receiver portion outwards from the bottom portion.
As already explained, it is advisable with heavier constructions to provide such a transmission member on each side wall of the receiver and respective corresponding slots on the bottom portion.
The invention is hereinafter described in two embodiments which are shown in the accompanying drawings, and wherein
Figure 1 shows in perspective view in the closed position a construction with a centrally located abutment or tongue on the cover portion serving as the transmission member,
Figure 2 shows also in perspective the same construction but in opened condition as seen from below,
Figure 3 shows a construction corresponding to the view shown in Figure 1, but with a pin which serves as the transmission member at one side of the receiver portion and with the cover portion turned through 180°, and
- 5 47546
Figure 4 similarly shows the same construction but in the fully open position.
In all the embodiments the bottom portion is indicated at 10 and is substantially flat and quadrilateral in shape, presenting a rectangular shape in plan, and provided with a suspension loop 11. The actual bottom 12 is according to the invention formed with an opening 13 which is located in the region of the back of a receiver portion 14, which together with the cover portion 15 is pivotal about a pivot 16 relative to the bottom portion, said pivot passing through all three parts near the front face 17 of the receiver. The cover portion 15 has an opening 18, so that only a pair of lateral arms 19 remain to provide bearings for the pivots 16 at each side. A tongue or abutment 21 is provided on, and in the upper plane of, the cover portion 15, the tongue lying in the plane of the cover 15 and projecting from the middle of the lower shorter side or end of the cover portion into the opening 18 of the cover portion. On pivoting the cover 15 into the erect position, the abutment 21 projects through the opening 13 in the bottom portion 12 and tilts the receiver 14 forwards relative to the bottom 12.
With the embodiment according to Figures 3 and 4, in which similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts, an arcuate slot 23 is provided in one side wall 22 of the bottom portion 12, through which slot projects a pin 24. The curvature centre of / of the slot 23 coincides with the axis of the pivot 16, and the pin 24 projects so far out from the side wall 22 of the bottom portion, that its end face is flush with the outer surface of the corresponding side wall 25 of the cover portion 15. The latter is formed at this point with a recess 26 which engages over or is adapted to receive the end of the pin in the closed position of the container, the edge 27 of the arm 19 of the cover portion 15 serving as a guiding edge for the pin 26 when the cover portion is tilted or displaced upwards.
- 6 47546
This arrangement can at the same time also be provided on the other arm of the cover portion or the corresponding adjacent parts of the two other container portions.
