Description

This invention relates to an ostomy bag. This application is divided out of our Irish Patent Application No. 554/78 (Specification No. 47191 ) to the description and claims of which the reader is referred.
The prior art is replete with attempts to provide an ostomy bag which can readily be coupled to and uncoupled from a suitable device worn by a user. For example, reference may be made to the following U.K. Patent Specifications Nos. 455 784, 1 212 904, 1 139 715, 839 818, 751 333.
According to the invention, there is provided an ostomy bag having an aperture for passage of the stoma, a coupling member encircling said aperture, said coupling member having two opposed walls of channel form when seen in cross-section, the open portion of the channel facing away from the bag.
The radially outer wall of the channel coupling member may have a rim extending inwardly around its inner periphery.
The rim may be arcuate in shape as seen in cross-section.
The channel shaped coupling member may have one or more r t radially outwardly extending ears.
The invention will be better understood from the following particular and non-limiting description of illustrative embodiments, given with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:Figure 1 is an elevation view of a first embodiment of the invention, illustrating a first coupling member, looking in a direction outwardly from the user; - 2 47193 Figure 2 is a vertical axial section on the line II-II through the coupling member shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is an enlarged section taken in a vertical (or any radial) plane showing one form of rim construction on the member shown in Figures 1 and 2; and Figure 4 illustrates an alternative rib construction. In Figures 1-3 an ostomy bag is indicated at 10, Figure 2 and is secured by heat welding to a surface 12, facing away from the user, on a coupling number 14. This member 14 is generally circular and defines an aperture 15 communicating with the bag interior which in use surrounds the user’s stoma. The aperture of course need not be circular but could be of any suitable shape.
Referring to Figure 3, the coupling member 14 is of channel shape seen in any radial cross-section and has a radially inner wallorlimb 24 and a radially outer wall or limb 26. A rim 28 extends inwardly around the inner periphery of the wall 26 and, together with the wall 24, defines a restricted annular mouth or entry 28A into which, in use, a rib part of a second coupling member can be pushed to firmly connect the two coupling members. Three ears 27, 29, 30 (Figure 1) are secured to or moulded integrally with the channel and each may serve to be gripped and pulled by the user when he wishes to separate the two coupling members, The ears 29 and 30 also serve for attachment of a belt if desired. For convenience of the user, the ear 27 may be located at any position around the axis and need not be at o'clock as illustrated.
The illustrated coupling member 48 in Figure 4 has radially inner and outlet limbs 50 and 52 joined by a radially extending web 54. The outer limb 52 has a rim 58, and this has an annular surface 60 at approximately 45° to the axis 62 of the member 48.
A purpose of the surface 60 is to engage in face-to-face contact with a correspondingly inclined flat annular surface on a second coupling member which is intended to co-operate with the channel-shaped member 14 when the ostomy bag disclosed is connected to a pad or dressing in accordance with Figure 4 of our co-pending Patent Application No. 1997/82 (Specification No. 77192 ) which is also divided out of Irish Patent Application No. 554/78 (Specification No. 47191 Although the ostomy bag 10 is not shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4 it will be understood that it is secured to the surface 12 (Fig.3) or 56 (Fig.4) of the channel-shaped member 14 or 48 as the case may be.

Claims (7)

1. CLAIMS;
1. An ostomy bag having an aperture for passage of the stoma, a coupling member encircling said aperture, said coupling member having two opposed walls of channel form when seen in crosssection, the open- portion of the channel facing away from the bag. 5
2. An ostomy bag according to Claim 1 in which the radially outer wall of said channel coupling member has a rim extending inwardly around its inner periphery.
3. An ostomy bag according to Claim 1 or 2 in which said channel shaped coupling member has one or more radially outwardly 10 extending ears.
4. An ostomy bag according to Claim 2 in which the rim has a surface remote from the wall which is of arcuate shape in crosssection.
5. An ostomy bag according to Claim 2 in which the rim has a 15 flat annular surface disposed at an acute angle to the axis of the coupling member, as seen in cross-section.
6. An ostomy bag substantially as herein particularly described with reference to and as illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings. 20
7. An ostomy bag substantially as herein particularly described with reference to and as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 4 the accompanying drawings.
