Description

This invention relates to a construction unit for use . in the formation of a fixture for a wall, floor or doorway for example, a skirting hoard, a door saddle, a door stop or an architrave.
According to the present invention, there is provided for use in the formation of a fixture for a wall, floor or doorway, construction unit comprising an elongate plastics facing member and a plurality of mounting members attached to a wall, floor or doorway, the facing member having on its reverse face, strips for snap fitting to said mounting members, and said mounting members each comprising a cylindrical stud having a head portion and a neck portion of reduced diameter relative to the head portion to define a peripheral ledge, the stud attached to the wall, floor or doorway by means of a fastener passing centrally through the head and neck so that the head is spaced from the wall, floor or doorway by said neck and to permit snap-fitting engagement at the peripheral ledge by the strips of the facing member.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which :~ Fig, IA is a vertical cross-sectioniof a construction unit according to a first embodiment of the present invention in the form of a skirting board; Fig. IB is a vertical cross-section of the skirting board about to be formed.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of a construction unit according to a second embodiment in the form of a door saddle; Fig..3 is an elevation of the top of a doorway; and 'Fig. 4 is a cross-section along any one of the lines IV-IV of Fig. 3., to an enlarged scale.
Generally to all embodiments, a construction unit comprises facing members being bar lengths 10 of extruded synthetic plastics material and mounting members being •Solids 11 of synthetic plastics material. Each bar length -246832 has a reverse face provided with two spaced strips 12 extending outwardly away from the face. The strips 12 are parallel to each other and to the side edges of the bar length 10. The outer ends of the strips 12 have opposed, inwatfdly directed flanges 13 and 14 each with a sloped outwardly directed face 15. Each stud 11 is cylindrical and has a head portion 17A and a neck portion 17B of reduced diameter relative to the head portion 17A to define a peripheral ledge 16. The head portion Γ7Α has a peripheral outwardly directed, sloped face 18. A bore 19 (Fig. IB) having a recessed entry 20 is provided in each stud 11 co-axially of the head portion 17A and through which a fastener, i.e. a screw or a fixing nail 21 can be' passed into a wall 22, a floor 23 or the uprights or head of a doorway 24 to secure said stud 11 to the wall 22 or floor 23. The sloped faces of flanges 13 and 14, and flange 16 are mutually complementary to facilitate snap fitting.
In a first embodiment as shown in Figs. IA and IB, the construction unit is a skirting board having a bar length 10 with an obverse face profiled to present, when fitted· to a wall, an upstanding portion 25 topped with an angled portion 26 which is at an angle of about seventy-five angular degrees to the horizontal and inclined towards the wall 22. The angled portion 26 extends in the same direction as the strips 12.
In use, the skirting board is constructed along the bottom of a wall 22 close to the floor 23 as follows :a plurality of studs 11 are secured at spaced intervals in a longitudinal series lengthwise along the bottom of the wall 22, and a first bar length 10 with its bottom edge resting on the floor 23, is snap-fitted onto the studs 11 and against the wall 22. As the flanges 13 and 14 of the bar length 10 are urged against the faces 18 of the studs 11, interaction between the sloped faces 15 and 18 causes the flanges 13 and 14 of the bar length 10 to move or flex relatively apart from each other. When the sloped faces 15 of these flanges 13 and 14 are moved beyond the faces 18 of the studs 11, i.e, the sloped -34683S faces are no longer in contact, the flanges 13. and 14 of the bar length 10 return to their normal unflexed position thereby causing the flanges 13 and 14 of the bar length 10 to engage in ledges 16 of the studs 11, thereby securing the bar length 10 to the wall 22 and forming a skirting board. Inthis position the outer edge of the angled portion 26 abuts against the wall 22. Further bar lengths 10 may be similarly secured as required.
The skirting board may be of a single bar length 10 of extruded material cut to size, or of two or more shorter lengths. The bar lengths 10 may be provided in standard lengths.
The skirting board end edges are mitred when they come together at angled wall junctions at corners of rooms.
In a second embodiment, as shown in Fig. 2, the construction unit is a door saddle having a bar length 10 with an obverse face profiled to present, when fitted to.'.a floor 23, a horizontal portion 28 topping two upstanding side portions 29 which'extend in the same direction as the strips 12.
In use, the door saddle is constructed on top of a door sill or threshold between the uprights of a doorway 24 as follows:- a plurality of studs 11 are secured at spaced intervals in a longitudinal series lengthwise along the sill and a bar length 10, with the bottom edge of both side portions 29 facing the floor 23, is snap-fitted onto the studs 11 with said bottom edges abutting against the floor 23. The interaction between the respective flanges 13 and 14 and faces 18 and ledges 16 is similar to that described in the first embodiment.
In a third embodiment', as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the construction unit is a door stop having a bar length 10 with an obverse face profiled to present, when fitted to a prepared upright or head of a doorway 24, a portion 30 and two side portions 31 which extend in the same direction -a46832 as the strips 12 and are in fact constituted by the outward face of said strips. The upright or head of a doorway 24 is prepared by a capping member 24A being secured thereto. · In use, a door stop is constructed on a doorway upright or head as follows: a plurality of studs 11 are secured at spaced intervals in a longitudinal series lengthwise along or up the upright or head and a bar length 10 is snap-fitted onto the stud 11, Again, as for the first embodiment, the interaction between the respective flanges, faces 18 and ledges 16 is similar.
In a fourth embodiment, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the construction unit is an architrave two of which are shown, one on each side of the doorway each having a bar length 10 with an obverse face profiled to present, when fitted around a doorway, portion 32 with one longitudinal side portion 33 constituted by the outward face of one of the strips, and the opposite side formed by an angled portion 34 which is at an angle of about seventy-five angular degrees to the horizontal, and sloped towards the doorway opening .
In use, an architrave is constructed on each room side of a doorway upright or head to edge same as follows: a plurality of studs 11 are secured at spaced intervals in a longitudinal series lengthwise along or up the side of the upright or head and a bar length 10 is snap-fitted onto the studs. Similar interaction between the respective flanges, faces and ledges occurs in the same way as for the first embodiment. The profiled obverse faces of the skirting board, door saddle, door stop and architrave may be other than that described without departing from the scope of this invention.
