Description
The invention relates to improvements in table frames, particularly table frames of the knock-down type.
It is an object of the invention to provide a table frame which is of a simple yet rigid and strong construction when assembled and which can readily be unassembled (or knocked-down) by removal of the legs to form a compact package for the purposes of transport and storage.
According to the invention, a table frame comprises a table rail which is adapted to support a table top, the table rail having four sides connecte at right angles to each other to form a box-like structure, and a wooden table leg connected to each corner of the table rail to support same, wherein each right angle corner portion of the table rail is located in a complementary rebate cut in each of said legs adjacent the top thereof and each table leg is bolted to said table rail by means of a bolt which extends from a surface of the leg facing outwardly of the table frame through the leg and diagonally through the corner portion of the table rail located in the rebate, and wherein the head of the bolt is countersunk in said surface of the leg. Preferably, a triangular corner block is positioned in each inner corner of the frame and the aforesaid bolt extends into said corner block to mate with a nut located in the corner block or at the surface of the corner block remote from the leg.
If the leg is of circular cross-section the portion removed to form the rebate is suitably in the shape of a sector of 90°, in cross-section.
An embodiment of the invention is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a detail of the construction of a table frame according to the invention;
- 2 42795
Fig. 2 is a perspective view in the direction of the arrow A of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a leg for a table frame of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the table frame comprises a wooden table rail which is made up of four sides 1 which are connected together at right angles to each other to form a box-like rectangular frame. In the construction shown in the drawings the rail sections are butt-jointed together but other forms of jointing may be used, for example, a dove-tail joint which would give a stronger construction. The table rail is supported by four legs 2 which are located at each of the four corners 3 of the table rail, and which are also made of wood.
The legs 2 are a circular cross-section and, as can be seen more clearly in Fig. 3, a rebate 4 is cut in each leg adjacent the top thereof. The rebate is formed by removing from the leg a portion which is in the shape of a sector of 90° in cross-section. The depth of the rebate 4 is at least the same as the width of the rail so that the corner portion 3 can fit snugly in the rebate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the line 5 forming the innermost corner of the rebate 4 is coincident with the longitudinal axis of the table leg 2. However, if a table with splayed legs is required the line 5 should be disposed at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the leg.
A wooden corner block 6 of triangular shape is glued in position in each inner corner of the table rail. A circular aperture 7 is bored diametrically through the leg 2, the corner portion 3 and the triangular block 6. A bolt 8 is inserted in the bore 7 and extends from the outwardly facing surface of the leg 2 through the leg and into the triangular block 6 where it mates with a T-nut 9 which is secured in the corner block by means of spikes 10. The bolt 8 is preferably formed with a socket-head which is countersunk in the leg 2.
- 3 42793
A table top (not shown) may be mounted on the table rail in well known manner.
Tables having a table frame according to the invention have the advantage that the legs can be removed easily by unscrewing the bolts 8 and so the table can be formed into a compact package or kit for transport or storage purposes.
Claims (8)
1. A table frame comprising a table rail which is adapted to support a table top, the table rail having four sides connected at right angles to each other to form a box-like structure, and a wooden table leg connected to each exterior corner of the table rail to support same, wherein each right angle corner portion of the table rail is located in a complementary rebate cut in each of said legs adjacent the top thereof and each table leg is bolted to said table rail by means of a bolt which extends from a surface of the leg facing outwardly of the table frame through the leg and diagonally through the corner portion of the table rail located in the rebate, and wherein the head of the bolt is countersunk in said surface of the leg.
2. A table frame as claimed in Claim 1, wherein a triangular corner block is positioned in each inner corner of the rail and the bolt extends into said corner block to mate with a nut located in the corner block or at the surface of the corner block remote from the leg.
3. A table frame as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the nut is secured to the said surface of the corner block by means of spikes on the nut which extend into the corner block.
4. A table frame as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein at least the top portion of each leg is circular in cross-section and the rebate is formed by removing from the leg a portion which has a shape, in cross-section, of a sector of approximately 90°.
5. A table frame as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the depth of the rebate is at least equal to the width of the rail.
6. A table having a frame as claimed in any of the preceding claims.
7. A table frame substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings. - 5 42795
8. A table frame in unassembled or kit form substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings.
