Description
The present invention relates to a covering for facing exterior or interior surfaces of buildings, e.g. walls inside rooms and damp wall areas.
Mortar is generally used for covering exterior wails and facing building: but its application is difficult and requires skilled labour.
In some cases, for example in the case of high quality buildings, the outer walls are frequently covered by panels, which may consist of natural or artificial stone, or extruded asbestos cement or even of metal, depending on the respectively desired architectural appearance. The inner walls are often covered with panels of wood or other suitable material.
However, these known panels are expensive to produce and have considerabl weight, which makes the handling and attachment to the wall difficult at the time o assembly. Furthermore, they require a large amount of space for storage and transportation, and their surfaces must not be damaged during storage and transportation. Also, the known panels are sensitive to weather and other environmental influences, since they do not have a ηοη-porous surface and therefore require a great deal of care.
According to the present invention there is provided a flexible covering for facing exterior or interior surfaces of buildings comprising an aluminium foil
- 2 42657 of maximum thickness 0.2 mm, an enamel layer of 0.08 mm thickness on one surface of the foil, and a backing layer having on one side thereof an adhesive surface bonding the backing layer to the other surface of the foil and on the other side thereof a further adhesive surface for bonding to said exterior or interior surfaces.
Preferably, the aluminium foil has a thickness of 0.1 mm.
The invention will now be described by way of example only.
A flexible covering comprises an aluminium foil coated on one surface with an enamel layer and having a backing layer on the other surface. The maximum thickness of the aluminium foil is 0.2 mm and an optimum thickness is 0.1 mm. The enamel layer is 0.08 mm in thickness.
The backing layer is a flexible sheet with adhesive surfaces on both sides. One of the adhesive surfaces bonds the backing layer to the aluminium foil. The other adhesive surface is used for bonding the covering to a surface to be faced.
The enamel layer (which faces outwards in use) is non-porous arid resistant to environmental influences, so that optimum weather resistance is ensured. The enamel layer may be of any colour, so that many coloured effects can be achieved. When choosing a light colour, the covering has a low heat absorption capacity and thus low thermal expansion. The wall covering has a long useful life and owing to the non-porous enamel layer can be easily cleaned and cared for.
It is possible to wind the covering into a roll of any length, so that it may be applied directly and bonded to the inner wall in the manner of wall paper.
The enamel layer adheres completely to the aluminium foil, so that the latter may be bent without parts of the enamel layer becoming detached at the bend. Owing to the excellent adhesive strength of the enamel layer, only hairline cracks may occur in the latter, by which neither the appearance nor the useful life will be adversely affected.

The wall covering according to the invention may also be used as a roof covering in place of the roofing felt used hitherto. It offers particular advantages as regards weather resistance, heat absorption, greater mechanical strength and fire resistive action. It may be guided around edges and corners on a roof and used, as a seal on a chimney stack in place of the chimney plates hitherto required.
Damaged guttering and sheet metal at windows, caused by environmental influences, may be repaired by means of these coverings, a corresponding strip of the covering being stuck into a damaged gutter or unsightly and damaged sheet metal around the window being covered with the covering.
Claims (3)
1. A flexible covering for facing exterior or interior surfaces of buildings comprising an aluminium foil of maximum thickness 0.2 mm, an enamel layer of 0.08 mm thickness on one surface of the foil, and a backing layer having on one side thereof an adhesive surface bonding the backing layer to the other surface of the foil and on the other side thereof a further adhesive surface for bonding to said exterior or interior surfaces.
2. A covering as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the aluminium foil has a thickness of 0.1 mm.
3. A flexible covering as claimed in claim 1 for facing exterior or interior surfaces of buildings substantially as hereinbefore described.
