Abstract

A fire barrier consists of a grille of cellular material, with cells (3) which extend from one side to the other, with their walls made from strip material coated with other material which swells when heated. A metal frame (81, 82) for ease of installation, encloses the grille and forms an internal passage running round the outside of the grille, which is so secured to it that it can move freely in the event of a fire. The swelling material is also applied to the frame. Thus when fire breaks out the heat causes expansion of the swelling material, shutting off the air flow which is otherwise unobstructed.
