Abstract

1461154 Finger endoprostheses E H MILLER and J H DUMBLETON 16 Sept 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 40318/74 Heading A5R A metacarpophalangeal or interphalangeal joint prosthesis comprises a proximal arm 20 and a distal arm 40 articulated together by a hinge structure, the hinge structure comprising a clevis on the distal end of the proximal arm, a gudeon on the proximal end of the distal arm and a pin 60 extending through the gudeon and clevis. The arms have intramedullary stems which each taper away from their respective hinge ends and are of generally rectangular cross section abutments 31 and 51 on the dorsal sides of the arms 20 and 40 respectively limit extension of the joint to 10[] and abutments 30 and 50 respectively limit flexion of the joint to 90[]. The stems are formed with indentations to increase the surface area of the device to aid it's retention by cement, and flanges 25 and 45 are provided at the ends of the stems adjacent the hinge to prevent seepage of cement into the hinge. One branch of the clevis is provided with a slot on its outer face and the pin 60 is provided with a T-shaped head 61 to engage said slot and prevent relative movement between these members. The pin 60 is provided with a counter bore whereby in use, the stems of the two arms are implanted in the resected bones and the pin 60 placed in position, a crimping tool 70 is then used to crimp out the counterbore to hold the pin in position.
