Abstract

1482662 Acoustic inspection of particles EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM) 29 July 1974 [30 July 1973] 33339/74 Heading G1G The quality of spherical particles is tested by causing them to impact a transducer the respective electrical outputs of which are amplified then fed to a high-pass filter. The numbers of signals respectively fed to and passed by the filter are compared and the frequency spectrum of selected ones of the filtered signals is determined. In the Fig. 1 embodiment, nuclear reactor fuel particles are passed through a heating tube 2 to raise them to their normal operating temperature, then dropped on to transducer 3 which has electronic means to overcome the effect of internal acoustic reflection in the transducer. The transducer output signals are fed to filter 6 which passes only signals expected from defect-free particles. Counters 5, 7 establish the total number of particles and the number of defect-free particles respectively. The envelope and frequency spectrum of the transducer signals are analyzed using oscilloscope 9 to detect defects in, thickness of or faulty bonding between layers of material constituting the particles. Units 8, 10 and 11 are recording devices. [GB1482662A]
