Abstract

1420394 Aminoplast oil adsorbent CIBAGEIGY AG 26 July 1974 [5 July 1973] 32097/73 Heading ClC [Also in Division C3] A composition for removing oils from aqueous emulsions comprises (a) 40-90 wt. per cent of an oil-adsorbing agent, (b) 9-50 wt. per cent of an emulsion-breaking agent and (c) 1-10 wt. per cent, to total 100%, of a hydrophobic material. Suitable adsorbents (a) are fibrous vegetable materials, cork granules, perlite, exfoliated vermiculite, volcanic ash, mineral wool, crumb and foam rubbers, polyether-, polystyrene- and polyurethane - foams, polypropylene and nylon fibres, leather shavings, wool, paper, charcoal and coke; finely divided insoluble polymers, especially aminoplast and vinyl polymers, are preferred. Suitable emulsion breakers (b) are ionic salts of polyvalent metals. Suitable hydrophobic materials (c) are paraffin wax or oil, castor oil, capryl wax and silicone oils. In the examples a finely divided urea- or melamineformaldehyde resin or acrylonitrile resin is milled with paraffin wax or beeswax and the UF mixture is used in conjunction with alum or CaCl 2 to remove oil from metal-working, cutting, or drilling emulsions.
