Abstract

1439837 Increasing the conductivity of fibres; antistatic yarn DOW BADISCHE CO 13 July 1973 [14 July 1972 21 Sept 1972] 33424/73 Headings D1K, DIP and D1W The electrical resistance of a filament is reduced to not more than 10<9> ohms/cm by suffusing finely divided electrically conductive particles into the annular region at the periphery of the filament. The particles may be 20-40 millimicron carbon black, silver, aluminium or bronze. They occupy the region extending up to 0.1 r inwards from the periof circular cross-section and the radius of the largest circle which can be inscribed within the cross-sectional perimeter of trilobal square and rectangular filaments. The particles comprise 2-20% by wt. of the filaments and give it a resistance of 10<4> to 10<9> ohms/cm. The filament may be a polyamide polyester, polyolefin polystyrene, polyacrylic, modacrylic or cellulosic and have a denier of 1 to 100. The conductive particles are preferably applied as a dispersion in a solvent for the filament (aqueous formic or acetic acid for nylon 6, acetone for cellulose triacetate and for modacrylic (60% acrylonitrile, 25% vinylidine chloride and 14% Butyl acrylamide) and benzene for polystyrene. Nylon 6 may be dissolved in the formic acid or sulphuric acid dispersions to increase its viscosity before it is applied to the polymer. In the examples the filament is drawn between 2 polyester pads saturated with the dispersion and the solvent is vapourised by air jets or removed by washing the filament. The dispersion may also be applied by painting, spraying, dipping, rolling and printing. Pile fabric A nylon 6 15 denier monofilament was suffused with carbon black particles and then twisted with a bulked 2600 denier continuous filament nylon 6 yarn comprising 136 strands to form an antistatic yarn. A level loop carpet having a pile height of 0.6 cm was prepared using a jute backing and a tufting machine, every fourth yarn being the antistatic yarn, the remainder being the 136 strand yarn. The electrically conductive filament comprised 0.2% of the weight of the carpet. [GB1439837A]
