Abstract

1369556 Tubular heat exchangers HERCULES Inc 9 Oct 1972 [13 Oct 1971 (4)] 46501/72 Heading F4S [Also in Division B1] In heat exchange apparatus 10 for exothermic or endothermic reactions between a liquid material and a gas, e.g. liquid state oxidation of p-xylene and methyl p-toluate with molecular oxygen with the aid of an oxidation catalyst, and comprising a pressure vessel 12 containing one or more assemblies 16 of tubes 44 extending between coaxially aligned inlet and outlet headers 40 and 42, the tubes 44 are configured to minimize sag and to accommodate thermal expansion during operation. Each tube comprises upper and lower lateral end sections 56 and 53, an elbow section 5A, and a longitudinal portion 55 having a laterally offset section 57. The tubes are arranged in a plurality of longitudinally disposed spaced apart radial planes with an access space 52 being left for maintenance and repair purposes and to permit removal of a support 58 extending between the headers 40, 42, once the tube assembly has been secured in position within the vessel. The inlet and outlet headers 40 and 42 are connected to feed and discharge conduits 46 and 48 respectively. Cooling or heating fluid may be passed through the tubes depending on whether the reaction is exothermic or endothermic. Liquid material to be treated is introduced through a feed port 26 and treated liquid material is withdrawn from the vessel through an outlet 28. Gas is intro duced into the liquid material in the vessel from an assembly 14 comprising pipes 30 and nozzles 32; a spent gas outlet 29 is provided in the top of the vessel. The tubes 44 are free to flex and vibrate with the currents of gas and liquid material, thereby minimizing the deposition of solid precipitates on the tubes. [GB1369556A]
