Abstract

1393085 Knee joint prosthesis NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 April 1972 [4 May 1971] 12919/71 Heading A5R A prosthetic knee-joint device comprises a femoral component Fig. 1, of a generally U- shaped channel member in which at least part of the outer surface 6, extending over one side wall 4, and part of the base 2, is of a convex curvature in the anterio-posterior direction; and a tibial component Fig. 6, including a platform member 10, having its upper surface 11, 12 concavely dished in a form generally complementary to the lower surface of the femoral component for mutual sliding and rolling engagement therewith. (Figure 9, not shown, illustrates the inter-engagement of modified femoral and tibial components). The remainder of the outer surface profile of the femoral component comprises a rectilinear part 7, extending from the curved part 6, to the remaining side wall 3, which has a curved profile of a smaller radius than the posterior side wall 4. The inner surface of the femoral component is adapted to be attached to the femur and may have a peg 5, of circular crosssection as an aid to fixation. The concavely dished surface of the platform of the tibial member comprises three parts; a central portion 11, having the same curvature as the surface 6, of the femoral component, and two substantially rectilinear edge parts 12, extending smoothly therefrom. A subsidiary platform 13 projects from the platform 10 and is used as an aid to fixation of the component to the tibia. The outer surface of the femoral component 6, 7 bears on the concave surface 11, 12 of the tibial component when in position at a joint and flexion is allowed between the surfaces 6 and 12 in the backward direction and is limited between surfaces 7 and 12 in the forward direction. In embodiments Figures 8, 9, 10, 11 (not shown) a peg (20) on the tibial component engages with a groove (21) on the femoral component, slots (22, 23) in both components provide clearance for ligaments, and an inturned edge (24) assists in fixation of the femoral component.
