Abstract
1367637 Packages formed of moulded thermoplastic compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970 14 May 1971] 53345/70 and 31418/71 Heading B8C A sealed package, such as a drum, or bottle, comprising contents partially, or totally, enclosed by a moulded container is formed from a thermoplastic composition which comprises a homogeneous copolymer of acrylonitrile and at least one aromatic olefine, the molar concentration of units of acrylonitrile being within the range of 86% to 93%. The thermoplastic composition may contain a compatible graft copolymer having a diene rubber substrate, the concentration of which is such that its rubber content is not more than 50% by weight of the thermoplastic composition. In order to prevent enrichment at the end of the polymerizing reaction precautions must be taken to feed the monomers, or at least the aromatic olefine, into the reaction medium throughout the course of polymerization. The acrylonitrile-aromatic olefine homogeneous copolymer allows injection, or blow, moulding of a container while imparting to it optimum impact resistance and impermeability of the container to gases. A suitable graft polymer comprises a superstrate having at least one aromatic olefine homogeneously copolymerized at a ratio of between 1 : 2 and 1 : 9 with acrylonitrile, the graft having a suitable refractive index if the thermoplastic composition of the container is transparent. The softening point of the copolymer and/or superstrate may be increased by adding a copolymerizable cyclic compound such as maleimide, and the thermoplastic composition may have additives such as dyestuffs, pigments, fillers, plasticizers, stabilizers, processing aids, and fungicides &c. The container may be comoulded with any other thermoplastic having a suitable melt viscosity such as rigid P.V.C. or polyolefin. The container may also be formed from a paper coated with the thermoplastic composition. The contents of the package may contain beverages, wines, acids, refrigerants and aerosol propellants, &c.
