1349284 Removing pollutants from water INTERCONTINENTAL CHEMICAL CO Ltd 23 July 1971 [24 July 1970] 34691/71 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] A process for treating pollutants (e.g. oil and organic and inorganic solids) floating on water comprises applying (e.g. spraying) to the water a polymerizable component the polymerization of which is induced by moisture and which polymerizes in the water to form a matrix incorporating the pollutants. The matrix may sink or be subsequently removed. The composition applied to the water may comprise an ester (e.g. alkyl or alkenyl, e.g. containing up to 16 C atoms, cyclohexyl or phenyl) of 2-cyano-acrylic acid, a solvent (e.g. liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. halogenated hydrocarbon such as methylene chloride and 1,1,1 - trichloroethane) and stabilizer, e.g. sultone, sulphur dioxide, benzoquinone and hydroquinone.
