1284475 Substituted diethynyl benzyl alcohols ELI LILLY & CO 22 May 1970 [26 May 1969 12 March 1970] 24985/70 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the Formula I: where R is a halogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-3 alkoxy, halo-C 1-3 -alkyl, cyano or phenyl radical. They are prepared by reacting ethynyl magnesium bromide with an appropriate ethynyl phenylketone in tetrahydrofuran or by reacting an appropriately substituted benzoic acid with sodium acetylide in the presence of acetylene and liquid ammonia. Compounds I act as soil fungicides. 4-Methylbenzoic acid, phenyl ester is prepared from phenol and 4-methylbenzoyl chloride. [GB1284475A]
