Abstract

1295902 Anaerobically polymerizable compositions LOCTITE CORP 4 Feb 1970 [4 Feb 1969 14 Jan 1970] 5253/70 Heading C3P Anaerobically polymerizable compositions useful for bonding interfitting metal parts comprise (a) a free radical polymerizable monomer and (b) a redox activatable latent initiator of free radical polymerization, and have reduced metal contamination. In particular, the compositions have an iron content of less than 0 1 part per million by weight. Metal contamination in the compositions is reduced by treating at least a portion of the composition or its precursor components with an agent which forms an insoluble metal-containing precipitate. Such agents include cationic sulphonate ion-exchange resins, sulphur, chelating agents, e.g. ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid and its sodium salts (several others also mentioned and exemplified), phosphomolybdic acid, and salts such as alkali metal ferricyanate, citrate, pyrophosphate, silicate, oxalate, cyanide, stearate, phosphate and sulphate. The monomer (a) is suitably an ester of acrylic or α-substituted acrylic acid, preferably containing at least two acrylic ester groups. The initiator (b) is preferably a hydroperoxide, e.g. hydrogen peroxide or more preferably an organic hydroperoxide or, alternatively, an organic perester which forms a hydroperoxide in situ. Optional additives include quinone or polyhydric phenol stabilizers, thickeners, plasticizers, dyes, adhesive agents, thixotropic agents and, in particular, polymerization accelerators, e.g. amines, sulphimides, imides and amides. In examples the monomer used is either polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (in one case in combination with acrylic acid) or the product obtained by reacting two moles of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate with 1 mole of the reaction product of toluene diisocyanate (2 moles) and dimethyl-4,41-di-(hydroxycyclohexyl)-methane (1 mole).
