Abstract

Shirred casing sticks are moisturised by wetting a deformable liquid-absorbent and liquid releasing member, for example sponges of polyurethane, vinyl, rubber, viscose, or regenerated cellulose, with water, contacting at least a portion of the outer surface of the stick therewith, and thereafter, removing the thus moisturised stick. One form of apparatus comprises a pair of sheets of the material in the form of endless belts, the lower end of which dip into water, and the belts defining between them a narrow area through which the stick passes downwards in contact with the belts. In another form the stick passes through the annular space between a roll and a part cylinder of the material. In another form the stick is rolled between two supported flat sheets, and in another form is passed through a hole in a block of the material. [GB1210179A]
