Abstract

An equestrian saddle with a built in breakaway stirrup safety mechanism connecting stirrup leathers and stirrups to the saddle. If a rider is dismounted from the saddle, when they fall from the saddle, a lanyard attached between the safety mechanism and the rider will activate the safety mechanism and as such release the stirrup leathers and stirrups form the saddle to reduce the risk of the rider being dragged by the horse.

Description

Equestrian Saddle with a B uitt in Breakaway Stirrup Safety Svstem Description T R U E. Q Q AS Backgrognd to the inve;_11i_9_n_ E D 0 The invention relates to an Equestrian Saddle with a built in breakaway stirrup safety system which will act as an aid in decreasing instances of leg hang ups in the event of a Jockey / Rider being unexpectedly dismounted from their horse. 0 Equestrian Jockeys / Riders can be at risk of serious injury because of hang ups on saddle stirrups in the event of being dismounted whilst a horse is galloping or jumping. Numerous Equestrian related injuries are related to being caught in the stirrup and being dragged by the horse, this invention is designed to reduce the risk of these types of injuries occurring.
Summagy of the Invention The invention relates to an Equestrian Saddle with a built in breakaway Stirrup safety mechanism. The safety mechanism is built into the saddle to which the Stirrup Leathers are attached. A lanyard is also connected to this mechanism which is then clipped onto the Jockey/Rider. If the Rider is dismounted from the saddle, when they reach point x of distance from the saddle that is customised to suit the individual this will activate the safety mechanism and as such release the Stirrup Leathers and Stirrups from the saddle to reduce the risks of the rider being dragged by the horse. Although this mechanism is designed to release at a certain point of rotation being a point where the jockey has reached a point of non-recovery during an ejection from their mount, the design insures that the Stirrups are secure and held in place during normal riding and are not released prematurely.
Drawings Figure 1 shows a side View elevation of the Safety Saddle according to the invention.
Figure 2 shows a plan view elevation of the Safety Saddle according to the invention.
Detailed Description of Invention Referring to figure 1, shows a side elevation view of the Quick Release buckle which is incorporated into the Pommel of the Equestrian Saddle to which the saddle stirrups are connected. The View shows how the Buckle is implanted within the Pommel area of the Saddle.
Now referring to figure 2, shows the plan View of the positioning of the quick release buckle which is incorporated into the Pommel of the Equestrian Saddle. This view also shows the connection points of the stirrups into the quick release Buckle. The stirrup leathers that hold the stirrups are connected to metal buckle clips that are inserted on either side of the quick release buckle only using two connection points of the possible five. The lanyard which is used to activate the release of the metal buckle clips from the Buckle in the event of the Jockey / Rider being dismounted from the Saddle, can also be seen from this view.
The lanyard is connected to the pivot pin of the Buckle. When this pivot pin is rotated to a 60 degree or greater angle in a clockwise or anti clockwise direction this will cause the release of the buckle clips which in turn will result in the stirrups being disconnected from the saddle.
As such this would mean that in the event of the Jockey / Rider being dismounted from the saddle, the stirrups would follow suit and reduce the risk of injury caused by being dragged by the horse because of foot hang ups on the stirrup. This lanyard must be attached to the jockey / rider once mounted and remain attached for the duration of a ride for the safety buckle to be released in the event of being dismounted unexpectedly from the horse. Prior to a jockey/rider disrnounting from the saddle under normal circumstances they must detach the lanyard fiom one’s self before dismounting.
The lanyard has a break away built within itself in case of an unplanned dismount. This break away is designed to be released alter the quick release buckle has been activated. This will ensure that the jockey / rider is completely separated fiom the saddle during an unplanned dismount.

Claims (1)

1. CLAIMS An equestrian saddle having a pair of stirrups mounted on the saddle by stirrup leathers which are connected to a quick-release buckle on the saddle, a lanyard attached to the quick-release buckle, the lanyard for attachment to a rider such that if the rider is dismounted from the saddle, it will activate the quick-release buckle to release the stirrup leathers and stirrups from the saddle. The saddle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the lanyard has an in-built break- away designed to be released after the quick-release buckle has been activated. The saddle as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the quick-release buckle is incorporated into a pommel of the saddle. The saddle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the stirrup leathers are connected to metal buckle clips that are inserted on either side of the quick-release buckle, the lanyard being connected to a pivot pin of the quick- release buckle such that when the pivot pin rotates to a 60 degree or greater angle, it will cause the release of the buckle clips to disconnect the stirrups from the saddle. An equestrian saddle substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
