Abstract
A building element support system comprises a retaining member (10) and a bracket (26) for use in cladding or facing support systems for structures. The retaining member (10) comprises a planar elongate body portion (12) having a longitudinal axis (14), wherein said body portion (12) defines a locating portion (16) and an engagement portion (18) which are longitudinally spaced from one another. The bracket (26) comprises a fixing aperature (28) for securing to a first structure, such as a concrete wall, a first slot (36) shaped to be engageable with a longitudinally extending support member (31) for supporting a second structure at a distance from the first structure. The formation of said first slot (36) is shaped so as to permit relative longitudinal sliding movement of the support member (31) and bracket (26) and to prevent relative lateral horizontal movement, vertical movement and relative rotation about the longitudinal axis (14) of the support member (31) and bracket (26) and a second slot (38) adapted to receive a retaining member (10).
Description
Building Element Support System Retaining Member
The present invention relates to a building element support system retaining member, especially, but not exclusively, for use in cladding or facing support systems for structures.
In building construction and refurbishment it is standard practice to provide the building with a cladding or facing. Consequently, there are a large number of known systems for supporting cladding or facings on the face of a structure.
It is known to provide horizontal locating bars on the structure, to which fabricated brackets are secured and are vertically adjustable by a screw system or the provision of serrations. An angle section support for projecting into a bed joint between vertically adjacent bricks in the cladding is located in seat portions provided in the bracket to provide support to the cladding. These supports may be screwed into the bracket, but they may also j OPEB TO PUBLIC IBSPECTIOB UBDER SECTION 28 ABD RULE 23 £050485 be hooked or slotted into the seats in the bracket, with the supports being secured by the seats when in operation.
Although the support hooked or slotted into the bracket has a number of advantages over the screwedin support, such as ease of manufacture and installation, the disadvantage of existing hooked or slotted supports is that they may become misaligned relative to the bracket through either deformation of the support itself or through an uneven structure. This can result in a misaligned and therefore weakened cladding.
It is therefore the aim of the present invention to provide a building element support system retaining member which obviates or mitigates one or more of the disadvantages referred to above.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a building element support system retaining member comprising:
a planar elongate body portion having a longitudinal axis, wherein said body portion defines a locating portion and an engagement portion which are longitudinally spaced from one another.
Preferably the locating portion and the engagement portion are longitudinally aligned with one another.
Preferably the locating portion is of a smaller height than the engagement portion.

Preferably the locating portion has a first inclined surface.
Preferably the engagement portion, has a second inclined surface.
Preferably the second inclined surface of the engagement portion extends longitudinally from the locating portion.
Preferably the locating portion and the engagement portion are separated by a trough.
Preferably the retaining member further comprises an abutment at one end.
Preferably the retaining member is constructed of plate steel or stainless steel.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a building element support system bracket comprising:
a first fixing means for securing to a first structure;
a first slot shaped to be engageable with a longitudinally extending support member for supporting a second structure at a distance from the first structure, wherein the formation of said first slot is shaped so as to permit relative longitudinal sliding movement of the support member and bracket and to prevent relative lateral horizontal movement, «050465 vertical movement and relative rotation about the longitudinal axis of the support member and bracket; and a second slot adapted to receive a retaining member.
Preferably the first slot comprises a first substantially horizontal portion and a first substantially vertical portion. Most preferably, the first slot is substantially L-shaped.
Preferably the second slot extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bracket. Alternatively, the second slot extends perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bracket.
Preferably the entrance of the second slot faces the first horizontal portion of the first slot. Alternatively, the entrance of the second slot faces the first vertical portion of the first slot.
Preferably the bracket comprises a first web portion which contacts the first structure when in use.
Preferably the bracket further comprises at least a first flange which projects in a plane substantially perpendicular to the first web portion, the first slot being provided in the first flange to receive a corresponding portion of the support member and the second slot being provided in the first flange to receive a corresponding portion of the retaining member.

Preferably the bracket comprises first and second flanges, each having a first and second slot.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a building element support system comprising the retaining member of the first aspect and the bracket of the second aspect.
Preferably the building element support system further includes:
a longitudinally extending support member for supporting a second structure at a distance from the first structure, the support member having a formation thereon which is engageable with at least a corresponding first slot on the bracket to provide a vertical support of the support member.
Preferably the support member is adapted such that it may fit within the first slot of the bracket, the support member including a load-bearing projection whichjengages and supports the second structure.
Wherein the retaining member is mounted between the bracket and the support member such that the engagement portion engages one of the second slots of one of the flanges of the bracket and the body portion engages the support member to pull an upper vertical portion of the support member forward and to force a vertical connecting web portion of the £05046j support member backwards to prevent misalignment of the support member.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Fig. 1 is a side view of a building element support system retaining member in accordance with a first aspect of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial side view of a building element support system bracket in accordance with a second aspect of the present invention;
Figs. 3 and 4 are in-use side views of a building element support system in accordance with a third aspect of the present invention;
Fig. 5 is an end view of the building element support system of Figs. 3 and 4;
Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of a second embodiment of the building element support system retaining member of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a third embodiment of the building element support system retaining member of Fig. 1; and
Figs. 9 to 11 are in-use perspective views of the building element support system of Figs. 3 and 4 «05 04 65 with the building element support retaining member of Fig. 8.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, a building element support system retaining member 10 has an elongate body portion 12 having a longitudinal axis

The body portion 12 has a locating portion 16 and an engagement portion 18, which are spaced apart, but aligned, in the direction of the longitudinal axis 14. Locating portion 16 is smaller in height than engagement portion 18.
Locating portion 16 has a first inclined surface 20 and engagement portion 18 has a second inclined surface 22. The first inclined surface 20 aids in the mounting of the retaining member 10. The second inclined surface 22 aids engagement of the retaining member 10 when in use.
The retaining member 10 also includes an abutment 24 which is located at one end of the body portion 12. The abutment 24 is effectively an over-sized section of the body portion 12 whose function is to provide a contact surface for a hammer or mallet etc.
The retaining member 10 is typically constructed from plate steel or stainless steel. However, it should be appreciated that the retaining member 10 could be fabricated from any other suitable metal.

Figures 2 and 9 to 11 show a building element support system bracket 26 for attachment through a fixing aperture 28 to a bolt 29 extending from a cast-in channel member on a concrete wall (or an expanding bolt projecting from a hole drilled in the concrete).
The fixing aperture 28 is a slot disposed at an angle so as to allow adjustment in directions having a vertical and/or horizontal component, and is formed in a first web portion 30 of the bracket 26 which contacts the concrete wall when in use.
The bracket 26 includes a pair of flanges 32 that project in a plane substantially perpendicular to the first web portion 30. With reference to Fig. 2, the flanges 32 each have a first formation in the form of a substantially L-shaped slot 36 that has substantially vertical and horizontal portions 36a, 36b and is formed so as to receive a corresponding portion of a support member 31 (see Figs. 3 and 4). The horizontal portion 36b is wider than the vertical portion 36a to aid sliding, since in use the support member 31 does not bear against the upper edge of the horizontal portion 36b. The flanges 32 also have a second formation in the form of a second slot 38 and is formed so as to receive a corresponding portion of the building element support retaining member 10. Slot 38 is adapted to receive the retaining member 10 such that it engages with the engagement portion 18.

The second slot 38 extends in a direction which is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bracket 26, such that its entrance faces the first horizontal portion 36b of the first slot 36.
With reference to Figs. 3 to 5 and 9 to 11 (note that Figs. 9 to 11 show a third embodiment of the retaining member 10, which is described below), a building element support system comprises a building element support system bracket 26, a building element support system retaining member 10 and a support member 31 for supporting a second structure in the form of a brick cladding, at a distance from the first structure. The support member 31 is movable relative to the bracket 26 along the wall.
The profile of the support member 31 is such that it may fit into the slots 36 of the flanges 32. The support member 31 is made up of a substantially vertical portion 31a and a substantially horizontal portion 31b that enters the slots 36, and a substantially vertical connecting web 40 which continues into a substantially horizontal second section 42 which has a load bearing projection 44 which extends in a plane perpendicular to the web portion 30 of the bracket 26 when in use.
The support member 31 is formed by pressing or bending from one piece of sheet metal, typically steel or stainless steel. The bracket 26 is also of unitary construction. The length of the support «05 0465 member 31 can be determined depending on the requirements of the job.
Once the support member 31 is installed it cannot be moved laterally or vertically, and cannot be rotated. However, the formation of the support member 31 and slots 36 in the bracket 26 allow relative longitudinal sliding movement of the support member 31 and brackets 26.
The retaining member 10 is mounted between the bracket 26 and the support member 31 by sliding the retaining member 10 in the longitudinal direction of the support member 31 through the second slots 38 of the bracket 26. Since the locating portion 16 is smaller in height than the engagement portion 18, the retaining member 10 passes freely through slots 38 until the second inclined portion 22 of engagement portion 18 comes into contact with one of the slots 38. This allows a user to manually slot the retaining member 10 into the bracket 26 by an amount that secures the retaining member 10 in a position ready for hammering {i.e. a user wearing gloves can easily slot the retaining member 10 between the bracket 26 and support member 31 before hammering. The remainder of the retaining member 10 is then forcibly inserted by using e.g. a mallet on the abutment 24 (abutment 224 in Figs. 9 to 11).
The first and second inclined portions 20, 22 of the locating and engagement portion 16, 18 aid in the *05 0465 insertion of the retaining member 10 in slots 38 of the bracket 26.
The retaining member 10 is mounted such that the engagement portion 18 engages only one of the slots 38 and the body portion 12 engages the support member 31 to pull an upper vertical portion 31a of the support member 31 forward and to force a vertical connecting web portion 40 of the supporting member 31 backwards to align the support member 31. Locating portion 16 of the retaining member 10 merely acts as a guide which allows the retaining member 10 to be partially mounted within the bracket 26 before the remainder is forcibly inserted. It is convenient to partially insert the retaining member 10 into the bracket 26 prior to hammering, as this removes the requirement for a user to align and hammer the retaining member 10 simultaneously.
Figures 6 and 7 illustrate a second embodiment of a brickwork support retaining member 110. The retaining member 110 in this embodiment is similar to the retaining member 10 of the first embodiment. The only difference is that the second inclined surface 122 of this retainer 110 extends longitudinally from the engagement portion 118 to the locating portion 116. Lengthening the second inclined surface 122 in this manner provides a greater surface area for engaging with the horizontal portion 38b of the slot 38.

Figure 8 illustrates a third embodiment of a brickwork support retaining member 210. The retaining member 210 in this embodiment is similar to the retaining member 10 and 110 of the first and second embodiments. The only difference is that a section of the body portion 212 has been cut-away to leave a trough 246 between the locating and engaging portions 116, 118. Removing a section of the body portion 212 in this manner reduces the amount of material required to manufacture the retainer 210, which reduces the unit cost.
Modifications and improvements may be made to the above without departing from the scope of the present invention. For example, although the locating portion 16 and the engagement portion 18 have been described above as being longitudinally aligned with one another, it should be appreciated that they may also be additionally spaced apart in the transverse direction.
Furthermore, although the locating portion 16 and the engagement portion 18 have been described above as being of different heights to allow the retaining member 10 to be partially inserted into the bracket, it should be appreciated that they could be the same height. Alternatively, although the locating portion 16 and the engagement portion 18 have been described above as being of different heights, it should be appreciated that the slots 38 of the bracket 26 could be made to be of different depths to achieve the same result.

Also, although the retaining member 10 has been shown above as being inserted into the bracket 26 from one side only, it should be appreciated that the retaining member 10 could be inserted into the bracket 26 from either side.
Furthermore, although the slots 38 have been described above as being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bracket 26, it should be appreciated that, as illustrated in Figs. 2 to 4, the slots 38 could be formed so that they skew from the longitudinal axis of the bracket 26.
Also, although the slots 38 have been described above as being formed in the flanges 32, such that the retaining member 10 is mounted perpendicularly to the flanges 32, it should be appreciated that the slots 38 could be formed in the flanges 32 such that the retaining member 10 is mounted parallel to the flanges 32. Alternatively, the slots 38 could be formed in the flanges 32 such that the entrance to the slot 38 faces the first substantially vertical portion 36a of the.first slot 36 (i.e. such that the retaining member 10 acts between the bracket 26 and the substantially vertical portion 31a of the support member 31, rather than the substantially horizontal portion 31b.
Claims (26)
1. A building element support system retaining member comprising a planar elongate body portion having a longitudinal axis, wherein said body portion defines a locating portion and an engagement portion which are longitudinally spaced from one another.
2. A building element support system retaining member as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the locating portion and the engagement portion are longitudinally aligned with one another.
3. A building element support system retaining member as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the locating portion is of a smaller height than the engagement portion.
4. A building element support system retaining member as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the locating portion has a first inclined surface.
5. A building element support system retaining member as claimed in Claim 4 wherein the engagement portion has a second inclined surface.
6. A building element support system retaining member as claimed in Claim 5 wherein the second inclined surface of the engagement portion extends longitudinally from the locating portion. £05 04 β5
7. A building element support system retaining member as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 6 wherein the locating portion and the engagement portion are separated by a trough.
8. A building element support system retaining member as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 7 wherein the retaining member further comprises an abutment at one end.
9. A building element support system retaining member as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 8 wherein the retaining member is constructed of plate steel or stainless steel.
10. A building element support system bracket comprising: a first fixing means for securing to a first structure; a first slot shaped to be engageable with a longitudinally extending support member for supporting a second structure at a distance from the first structure, wherein the formation of said first slot is shaped so as to permit relative longitudinal sliding movement of the support member and bracket and to prevent relative lateral horizontal movement, vertical movement and relative rotation about the longitudinal axis of the support member and bracket; and a second slot adapted to receive a retaining member. 11. A building element support system bracket as claimed in Claim 10 wherein the first slot comprises a first substantially horizontal portion and a first substantially vertical portion.
12. A building element support system bracket as claimed in Claim 10 or Claim 11 wherein the first slot is substantially L-shaped.
13. A building element support system bracket as claimed in any of Claims 10 to 12 wherein the second slot extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bracket.
14. A building element support system bracket as claimed in any of Claims 10 to 12 wherein the second slot extends perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bracket.
15. A building element support system bracket as claimed in any of Claims 10 to 14 wherein the entrance of the second slot faces the first horizontal portion of the first slot.
16. A building element support system bracket as claimed in any of Claims 10 to 14 wherein the entrance of the second slot faces the first vertical portion of the first slot.
17. A building element support system bracket as claimed in any of Claims 10 to 16 wherein the £050465 bracket comprises a first web portion which contacts the first structure when in use.
18. A building element support system bracket as claimed in Claim 17 wherein the bracket further comprises at least a first flange which projects in a plane substantially perpendicular to the first web portion, the first slot being provided in the first flange to receive a corresponding portion of the support member and the second slot being provided in the first flange to receive a corresponding portion of the retaining member.
19. A building element support system bracket as claimed in Claim 18 wherein the bracket comprises first and second flanges, each having a first and second slot.
20. A building element support system comprising a building element support system retaining member and a building element support system bracket, the retaining member comprising a planar elongate body portion having a longitudinal axis, wherein said body portion defines a locating portion and an engagement portion which are longitudinally spaced from one another; and the bracket comprising: a first fixing means for securing to a first structure; *0 504.65 » a first slot shaped to be engageable with a longitudinally extending support member for supporting a second structure at a distance from the first structure, wherein the formation of said first slot is shaped so as to permit relative longitudinal sliding movement of the support member and bracket and to prevent relative lateral horizontal movement, vertical movement and relative rotation about the longitudinal axis of the support member and bracket; and a second slot adapted to receive a retaining member.
21. A building element support system as claimed in Claim 20 wherein the building element support system further includes: a longitudinally extending support member for supporting a second structure at a distance from the first structure, the support member having a formation thereon which is engageable with at least a corresponding first slot on the bracket to provide a vertical support of the support member.
22. A building element support system as claimed in Claim 21 wherein the support member is adapted such that it may fit within the first slot of the bracket, the support member including a load-bearing projection which engages and supports the second structure.
23. A building element support system as claimed in an of Claims 20 to 22 wherein the retaining member £0504β| is mounted between the bracket and the support member such that the engagement portion engages one of the second slots of one of the flanges of the bracket and the body portion engages the support member to pull an upper vertical portion of the support member forward and to force a vertical connecting web portion of the support member backwards to prevent misalignment of the support member.
24. A building element support system retaining member substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
25. A building element support system bracket substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
26. A building element support system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
