Abstract
An improved tub container with lid in which the container (10) is elongate and has an open-topped holding portion (12) with an outwardly-extending peripheral ledge surround (14). The lid (16) is correspondingly elongate and has a closure portion (18) to close off the open top of the holding portion (12) and an outwardly-extending peripheral lip surround (20) to overlie the peripheral ledge surround (14). The peripheral ledge surround (14) and the peripheral lip surround (20) both are extended at one location and are secured thereat one to the other. The peripheral lip surround extension (20) has a weakened line (30) to allow the lid (16) when opened from the container (10) to be flexed or hinged away from the open top of the container (10) for access to any contents placed therein. <Figure 3>
Description
This invention relates to an improved tub container with lid for use in packaging a foodstuff, for example a butter, a margarine or a spread, the container with lid being for re-use at least until the contents are used up. The container with lid are primarily, but not only, to be used direct from a refrigerator to a table and vice versa
Accordingly, the present invention is an improved tub container with lid in which the container is elongate and has an open-topped holding portion with an outwardiy10 extending peripheral ledge surround and the lid is correspondingly elongate and has a closure portion to close off the open top of the holding portion and an outwardlyextending peripheral lip surround to overlie the peripheral ledge surround, the peripheral ledge surround and the peripheral lip surround both being extended at one location and being secured thereat one to the other, the peripheral lip surround extension having a weakened line to allow the lid, when opened from the container, to be flexed or hinged away from the open top of the container for access to any contents placed therein.
Preferably, the weakened line is formed of a line of perforations. Alternatively, the weakened line may be a crease line.
Preferably also, the two extensions are adhered together. Alternatively, the two extensions may be jointed together by ultrasonic welding.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Fig. 1 is cross-sectional view of a tub container with lid according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the container with lid closed thereover; and
OPEN TO ^PTCHON UNDER SECTION 28 AND RULE 23

tgn?m a
Fig. 3 is a side view ofthe container and lid to a smaller scale with the lid shown hinged open from the container.
Referring to the drawings, an improved tub container with lid is provided in which the container 10 is elongate and has an open-topped holding portion 12 with an outwardly-extending peripheral ledge surround 14. The lid 16 is correspondingly elongate and substantially rectangular and has a closure portion 18 to close off the open top ofthe holding portion 12 and an outwardly-extending peripheral lip surround 20 to overlie the peripheral ledge surround 14. The peripheral ledge surround 14 and the peripheral lip surround 20 are both extended at 24 at one end 22 of the container and lid are secured thereat one to the other. The peripheral lip surround extension 24 having a weakened line 30 to allow the lid 16, when opened from the container 10, to be flexed or hinged away from the open top of the holding portion 12 of the container 10 for access to any contents placed therein. This is as shown in Fig. 3. The opposite end 26 of the lid 16 has a comer tab extension 28 for use in opening the lid 16 from the container 10. The weakened line 30 is formed of a line of perforations. The two extensions 24 are secured together by adhesion.
In a first modification, the weakened line 30 is a crease line.
In a second modification, the two extensions 24 are secured together by ultrasonic welding.
In a third modification, the extension 24 may be provided at the comer diagonally opposite to the comer tab extension 28.
In use, a container and lid as described above is used to hold a food product of the type that is used periodically over a long period. Such a product is a butter spread or similar. The product is normally kept in a chilled environment such as a refrigerator and placed on a table for use and then returned to the chilled environment. To use the
IP8 200 5 8 product, the lid 16 is lifted by the tab extension 28 and peeled back to a position as shown in Fig. 3 to reveal the full open top of the holding portion 12. After use, the lid 16 is moved back over the open top of the holding portion 12 and resealed.
The annular side surround of the tub container may be printed, have a label 5 adhered therearound or a printed sleeve may be shrunk-wrap fitted therearound.
Variations and other modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention described above.

An improved tub container with lid in which the container is elongate and 5 has an open-topped holding portion with an outwardly-extending peripheral ledge surround and the lid is correspondingly elongate and has a closure portion to close off the open top ofthe holding portion and an outwardly-extending peripheral lip surround to overlie the peripheral ledge surround, the peripheral ledge surround and the peripheral lip io surround both being extended at one location and being secured thereat one to the other, the peripheral lip surround extension having a weakened line to allow the lid, when opened from the container, to be flexed or hinged away from the open top of the container for access to any contents placed therein.
2. An improved tub container with lid as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the weakened line is formed of a line of perforations.
3. An improved tub container with lid as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the 20 weakened line is a crease line.
