Abstract
Prodn. of N-arylsulphonyl-carbamate derivs. of formula (I) ArSO2NH-CO-ZR4R5 comprises (1) catalytic carbonylation of sulphonylimine (II) ArSO2N=XR1R2R3 then (2) treating the reaction mixt. contg. the isocyanate (III) ArSO2NCO with active H cpd. (IV) R4R5ZH. Alternatively the carbonylation is carried out in presence of (IV). In formulae, Ar is phenyl, benzyl, naphthyl, pyridyl or thienyl (all opt. substd.); R4 and R5 are e.g. 1-6C alkyl or haloalkyl; benzyl, phenyl, naphthyl, pyridyl, pyrimidinyl or triazinyl (but not both phenyl, naphthyl, pyridyl, pyrimidinyl and/or triazinyl), these 6 gps. being opt. substd. Z is N, O or S, provided that when Z is O or S, R4 is electron pair and R5 is opt. susbtd. pyrimidinyl or triazinyl, H or electron pair; and if Z is N, R4 and R5 are not electron pairs; R1, R2 and R3 are 1-12C alkyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, phenyl or naphthyl (the last 2 opt. susbtd.), electron pair or O; or R1 and R2 are together divalent hydrocarbonyl; X is iodo, S, Se, Te, P, As or Sb. - (II) which may be formed in situ, are carbonylated at -20 to 200 (pref. -20 to 120) deg.C and CO partial pressure 10 power5-10 power7 Pa, in a solvent for 0.1-10 hr. The catalyst is a transition metal of periods 4, 5 or 6, or its oxide, salt, carbonyl cpd. or complex in which coordination is through a C, Sn, N, P, As, Sb, O, Se, Te and/or halo. It can be added or formed in situ and can be a homogeneous, heterogeneous or heterogenised homogeneous catalyst.
