Abstract
Raw ammonia synthesis gas is produced from a fresh hydrocarbon feed (I) by (a) forming a first mixed feed (II) comprising steam, a major proportion of (I), and air or O2-enriched air as oxidant; introducing (II) to an exothermic catalytic steam-reforming zone (A) (e.g. 8 in the Fig.) wherein is formed a reformed gas (III) contg. less than 1.0 vol% (dry basis) residual hydrocarbon; (b) forming a second mixed feed (IV) comprising steam and a remaining portion of (I); introducing (IV) to an endothermic catalytic stem reforming zone (B) (e.g. 13 in the Fig.) wherein is formed a second reformed gas (V) contg. less than 4.0 vol% (dry basis) residual hydrocarbon; (c) combining (III) and (V) and passing the mixt. in indirect heat exchange with the feed (IV) in zone (B), to provide all the heat required for the endothermic reforming in zone (B); and (d) withdrawing the resulting cooled combined gases as raw ammonia synthesis gas.
