Abstract
Diorgano disuphides (I) are prepd. by oxidn. of mercaptans at 0-100 deg.C. in presence of base and opt. phase transfer catalyst, using halogen cpd. (II) capable of giving halogen atom and accepting H atom in its place. E.g., 2 RSH + CCl4 + NaOH gives R-S-S-R + HCCl3 + NaCl + H2O. - Mercaptan is 1-18C alkyl mercaptan (III) or 1-6C alpha,omega-dimercaptan, opt. mixed with (III). (II) is CCl4. Base is NaOH. Reaction is carried out in aq. medium.
