Abstract

The method involves the cold deformation and swarf-less opening of cladding by trimming 70-80% of the cladding wall by rolling and breaking the weakened wall. The rolling process is carried out by rotating the cladding around its longitudinal axis while feeding a roller forward. The weakened wall is broken by the application of a force of approx. 50-60 KN. The equipment comprises 2 special purpose machines:-the roller unit comprises a drive motor which is used to rotate the cladding and to feed the roller forward by means of worm and cylindrical gear transmissions. The breaker unit holds the cladding by means of clamps, and uses a ball spindle driven by a worm gear to break open the cladding. The breaker unit is equipped with other clamps to extract the test pieces from the open cladding.
