Abstract

Rhizobium concentrates with good herbicide tolerance, are prepd. by first isolating Rhizobium varieties from live root tissue of selected high-nitrogen binding leguminosae, (2) treating the Rhizobium with herbicides normally used in the cultivation of leguminosae and other important crops like maize or wheat, (3) inoculating a synthetic mixt. of the most important leguminosae with the Rhizobium surviving the herbicide treatment and (4) sowing the seeds of the inoculated leguminosae into seed trays contg. soil which has never grown soy beans. - From the roots of the resulting plants Rhizobium is isolated and the process is repeated pref. 3-4 times with increasing herbicide concns. The process is finally scaled up to outdoor fields, the resulting Rhizobium extract is mixed with herbicide solns. and the prod. applied to the soil.
