Abstract
The compsns. used to prevent the formation of slippery road surfaces in freezing conditions contain mixts. of rock salt and granulated rhyolite tuff as roughening granular ingredient. The rhyolite tuff has a high content of zeolites, up to 50 wt.% The zeolites bind by ion exchange and ion adsorption, a large proportion of the salt soln. generated on the wet or icy road surface and considerably reduce the damage to the environment resulting from the use of rock salt in guarding against formation of slippery road surfaces.
