Mixts. of sterin cpds. useful as raw materials in the pharmaceutical industry are obtd. from the cut-back residues accruing in the refining of vegetable oils and/or animal fats, by the saponification of 1 pt. wt. of the residues with 0.1-0.15 pts. wt. sodium-hydroxide in 4-8 pts. wt. methanol at the b.p. of the reaction mixt. for 2-5 hrs., opt. sepg. any mechanical impurities at the b.p., adding to the clean soln. calcium-chloride-dihydrate in amts. 0.7-1.4 times the wt. of sodium-hydroxide used, pref. 0.4-0.8 equivs. in methanol soln., sepg. the insoluble soaps at the b.p. and prepg. the sterin cpds. from the soln. by known methods and opt. purifying same. - Process allows the prepn. of sterin cpds. of good quality suitable for micor-biological processing in a simple and economic way. The target prods. are important raw materials for the synthesis of intermediaries in the prepn. of steroids.
