Abstract

A reverse osmosis desalination plant comprising; (i) a filter element consisting of reverse osmosis membranes defining salt passages; (ii) a pump for pumping water to be desalinated to the filter; and (iii) an obstruction in the water flow path between the pump and the filter for introducing turbulence into the flowing water. This causes a pressure drop such that water downstream of the obstruction is more turbulent and has a lower pressure than that upstream. A method of desalinating water comprising; (i) pumping water to be desalinated to a filter element consisting of reverse osmosis membranes defining salt passages; (ii) causing a pressure drop in the water flowing to the filter element; (iii) simultaneously introducing turbulence into the water flow; and (iv) feeding the turbulent water at the lower pressure into the salt passages of the filter element.
