Abstract
Making fatty acid esters of sorbitan comprises reacting the fatty acid directly with sorbitol in the presence of a catalyst system which comprises a phosphorous oxyacid, including a reducing phosphorous oxyacid, and an alkali/alkaline earth metal strong base in a molar ratio of acid to base of 0.9:1-1.7:1 and the catalyst system concentration of 1.5-30 wt% of the sorbitol. Also claimed is a method of making an alkoxylated ester of sorbitan made by the process comprising reacting the ester with an alkoxylate oxide.
