Abstract

The proposed method uses a biological reactor (3) with cellulose fill. A bacterial culture, based on one or more strains of nitrate dismantling bacteria is established in the reactor. The culture is sustained by the addition of feed, including complexes and trace elements. Following the removal of nitrates, the water is routed to a tank (4), where it is aerated and treated with an oxidizing agent. The suspended solids content of the water is removed, as follows: In some cases a coagulant is added, then the water is passed through a clarifier (8), and filters (10 and 13), in some cases slow filtration is used. The dissolved organic material content is removed by an activated carbon filled adsorber (14). Finally the treated water is sterilized. The proposal also includes the equipment required for the above.
