The terracotta building block has transverse apertures (5) lying parallel to its assembly faces (3) and located in staggered rows separated by thin partitions (6). Each aperture has a maximum width of 6 mm, and the partitions between rows are not more than 4 mm thick, with the ratio between the aperture width and partition thickness being not more than 1.5 : 1. In a variant the block can be made with same aperture width and partition thickness, both being between 2.5 and 3 mm, and the apertures can be in the shape of elongated ovals, lozenges or triangles.
