Abstract

The proposed instrument comprises the following: Gas filled detector (1), with two parallel boundary surface (2). Electrodes leading to the detector are connected to a DC supply unit (4), signal processing unit (5) (preferably a pre-amplifier, amplifier, signal shape discriminator and signal magnitude discriminator) and signal processing unit (6). Typically, the detector (1) contains a high resistance dielectric material (7), with gas filled microscopic cavities (8). Inside these cavities the strength of the electric field exceeds that in the dielectric material (7). The wall of the cavities (8) forms a converter producing the electrically charged particles from the ionising and/or nuclear radiation which enter the gas-filled space of the cavities.
