Abstract

Use of a suspended silicated carrier with high specific surface to enhance the action of nitrifying bacteria used to treat waste waters highly charged with ammonium. Procedure comprises treating waste waters highly charged with ammonia with nitrifying microorganisms (nitrifying bacteria) in the presence of a suspended silicated carrier substance with a specific surface of greater than 20 m2>/g, especially greater than 50 m2>/g, and optionally subjecting the nitrified waste water to denitrification with denitrifying microorganisms (denitrifying bacteria).
