Abstract
Nucleic acid (I) encodes a protein (II) of the 37 kD protein family or its immunogenic fragment of Babesia divergens . Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) nucleic acid (Ia) encoding a protein of the 37 kD family able to bind monoclonal antibody F42F8; (2) recombinant DNA molecule (Ib) comprises (I) or (Ia) plus expression control elements; (3) live recombinant carrier microorganism (III) containing (I), (Ia) or (Ib); (4) host cell (IV) containing (I), (Ia), (Ib) or (III); (5) vaccine (A) for protecting cattle against infection by B. divergens, or its symptoms, containing: (a) at least one (II), or its immunogenic fragments and a carrier; (b) (I), (Ia), (Ib), (III) or (IV); or (c) antibody (Ab) against (II); (6) preparing (A); (7) diagnostic kit for detecting antibodies (Ab1) against B. divergens containing a purified (II) or its fragment containing an antigenic determinant; (8) diagnostic kit for detecting B. divergens containing (Ab); (9) detecting (Ab1) by incubating serum with (II) or its antigenic fragment; and (10) detecting B. divergens by incubating serum with (Ab). ACTIVITY : Antiprotozoal. No supporting data is given. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Vaccine. Gerbils were injected subcutaneously, twice, with 5 mu g of a fusion of glutathione-S-transferase and a B. divergens 37 kD protein, formulated with QuilA adjuvant. Three weeks after the second injection, the animals were challenged with 10 6> erythrocytes parasitized with the homologous B. divergens strain Rouen. Immunoprecipitation showed that all animals had produced a strong humoral response.
