Abstract

A cell surface polypeptide (I) which is expressed by thymocytes and by mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes, is new. It induces adhesion of mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes to antibodies recognising (I); these antibodies also produce an increase in peripheral blood lymphocytes in the presence of an antibody recognising CD3 antigen. (I) contains the amino acid sequence FDPPPF in its extracellular region and the sequence YMFM in its intracellular region. The polypeptide (I) is preferably of human origin. Also claimed are: (1) polypeptides derived from (I) by addition, deletion or substitution of one or more amino acid residues; (2) DNA coding for (I), its derivatives or its fragments; (3) vectors containing the DNA as in (2); (4) host cells transformed by the vectors as in (3) (especially where the transformant is Escherichia coli DH10B, FERM BP-5725); (5) disulphide-bond homodimers of extracellular fragments of (I); (6) fusion peptides containing (I) extracellular fragments together with a part of an immunoglobulin (especially IgG) (such as a n IgG heavy chain constant region or its hinge, C2 or C3 domain); (7) disulphide-bond homodimers of these fusion peptides; (8) antibodies (especially monoclonal antibodies) recognising all or part of (I); (9) hybridomas expressing antibodies as in (8)(especially FERM BP-5707 and FERM BP-5708); (10)transgenic mice expressing rat or human (I); and (11) knockout mice lacking the ability to express (I).
