Abstract

A laundry or cleaning composition comprises: (a) 0.0001-99.9 (especially 0.1-25)% of a bleach activator and/or organic percarboxylic acid; (b) 1-49% of a transition metal bleach catalyst comprising a complex of a transition metal and a cross-bridged macro-polycyclic ligand in which: (I) the metal is selected from Mn(II), Mn(IV), Mn(V), Fe(II), Fe(III), Fe(IV), Co(I), Co(II), Co(III), Ni(I), Ni(II), Ni(III), Cu(I), Cu(II), Cr(III), Cr(IV), Cr(V), Cr(VI), V(III), V(IV), V(V), Mo(IV), Mo(V), Mo(VI), W(IV), W(VI), Pd(II), Ru(II), RU(III) and Ru(IV) ( especially Mn(II), Mn(III), Mn(IV), Fe(II), Fe(III), Fe(IV), Cr(II), Cr(III), Cr(IV), Cr(V) and/or Cr(VI)); (II) the macro-polycyclic rigid ligand is coordinated by preferably four or five, donor atoms to the same metal and comprising: (i) an organic macrocyclic ring containing four or more donor atoms, preferably at least three, more preferably at least four of the donor atoms being N, separated by covalent linkages of 2 or 3 non-donor atoms, two to five (preferably three to four, more preferably four) of the donor atoms being coordinated to the same transition metal atom in the complex; (ii) a cross-bridged chain, which covalently connects at least two, preferably non-adjacent, donor atoms of the ring, the donor atoms being bridgehead donor atoms coordinated to the same metal in the complex. The linking moiety, preferably a cross-bridged chain, comprises 2-10 atoms, the chain being selected from 2,3 or 4 non-donor atoms, and 4-6 non-donor atoms with a further donor atom; and (iii) optionally, one or more non-macro-polycyclic ligands, preferably selected from , preferably selected from H2O, ROH, NR3, RCN, OH-, OOH-, RS-, RO-, OCN-, SCN-, N3-, CN-, F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, O2-, NO3-, NO2-, SO42-, SO32-, PO43-, organic phosphates, organic phosphonates, organic sulphates, organic sulphonates, and aromatic N-donors such as pyridines, pyrazines, pyrazole(s), imidazole(s), benzimidazole(s), pyrimidines, triazoles, and thiazoles with R being H, optionally substituted alkyl or aryl; and (c) at least 0.1% adjunct ingredient(s), preferably oxygen bleaching agent; Also claimed are: (1) a laundry or cleaning composition comprising: (a) 0.0001-99.9 (especially 0.1-25)% of a bleach activator and/or organic percarboxylic acid; (b) 1 ppb-49% of a transition metal bleach catalyst comprising a complex of a transition metal and a cross-bridged macro-polycyclic ligand in which: (I) the metal is selected from Mn(II), Mn(IV), Mn(V), Fe(II), Fe(III), Fe(IV), Co(I), Co(II), Co(III), Ni(I), Ni(II), Ni(III), Cu(I), Cu(II), Cr(III), Cr(IV), Cr(V), Cr(VI), V(III), V(IV), V(V), Mo(IV), Mo(V), Mo(VI), W(IV), W(VI), Pd(II), Ru(II), RU(III) and Ru(IV); and (II) the macro-polycyclic rigid ligand is selected from (i) ligand of formula (A) having denticity of 4 or 5, (ii) ligand of formula (B) having denticity of 5 or 6, (iii) ligand of formula (C) having denticity of 6 or 7; and (iv) optionally one or more non-macro-polycyclic ligands as above; and (c) at least 0.1% adjunct ingredient(s), preferably oxygen bleaching agent; and (2) a laundry or cleaning composition comprising: (a) 1 ppm-99.9 (especially 0.1-25)% of bleach activator; (b) 1 ppb-99.9% (especially 0.05-500 ppm) of a transition metal bleach catalyst comprising a 1:1 mol complex of a catalytic Mn metal selected from Mn(II), Mn(III), Mn(IV) and a tetradentate cross-bridged macro-polycyclic ligand of formula (D); and optionally non-poly-macrocycle ligands; and (c) balance to 100%, preferably at least 0.1% of adjunct materials comprising oxygen bleaching agent selected from H2O2, perborate or percarbonate. In (A)-(C), E = moiety (CRn)a-X-(CRn)a'; X = O, S, NR or P, or a covalent bond (especially covalent bond); for each E the sum of a + a' = 1-5 (especially 2 and 3); G = (CRn)b; R = H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, alkylaryl or heteroaryl or two or more are covalently bonded to form an aromatic or heteroaromatic, cycloalkyl or hetero-cycloalkyl ring; D = donor atom selected from N,O, S, or P, at least two D atoms are bridge-head donor atoms coordinated to the transition metal; b = C or D or cycloalkyl or heterocyclic ring; n = 1 or 2, completing the valence of C atoms to which R moieties are bonded; n' = 0 or 1 completing the valence of D donor atoms to which R moieties are bonded; n'' = 0,1 or 2 completing the valence of B atoms to which R moieties are bonded; a, a' = 0-5, where a + a' = 2 or 3, the sum of all a + sum of all a' in formula (I) being 7-12, the sum of all a + a' in formula (II) being 6-12 (especially 8), the sum of all a + a' in formula (III) being 8-15 (especially 10) and the sum of all a + a' in formula (IV) being 10-18 (especially 12); b = 0-9 (especially 0-5) or one or more of the (CRn)b moieties covalently bonded from any D to the B atom is absent as long as at least two (CRn)b covalently bond two of the D donor atoms to the B atom and the sum of all b is 1-5. In (D), R1 = H or 1-20C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl and all N atoms in the rings are coordinated with the transition metal.
