Claims (1)

1. Protector for the end of the winding core (20), which contains: an annular, rigid base part (21) connected directly to the end (11) of the winding core; and an annular shock-absorbing part (30) rigidly attached to said rigid base part (21); wherein the winding core end protector (20) has an outer diameter generally equal to the outer diameter of the winding core, and an inner diameter generally equal to the inner diameter of the winding core; wherein the rigid base part (21) is made of a material from the group consisting of metals or solid polymers of high strength; and the shock absorbing portion of the end protector (30) is made from a group consisting of softer durometer polymers or elastomeric materials, said materials being characterized by surface toughness, overall impact flexibility, and high resistance to material creep and compression under load; wherein the rigid base portion has a plurality of holes (22) formed therein, each said hole (22) being adapted to receive a fastener (29) to hold the rigid base portion (21) directly to the end of the winding core (11); wherein the shock absorbing part (30) has a plurality of cavities which enable said fasteners to pass through and engage the rigid base part with the end of the winding core; and characterized in that the shock absorbing portion is comprised of a plurality of protrusions (32) spaced between each adjacent protrusion (32), and a plurality of holes (31) formed between the protrusions (32) to allow said fasteners to pass through and engage the rigid the base part (21) with the end of the winding core (11).
