Abstract
Cancer-causing damage to tissues and DNA by high energy charged particles, such as Galactic Cosmic Rays or Solar Protons, is recognised as being the most serious danger faced by astronauts on extended missions in open space. Existing shielding methods and materials are recognised as being inadequate to deal with this problem. A hybrid composite material is disclosed herein consisting of a hydrogen-rich polymeric matrix containing a dispersion of magnetic particles together with a dispersion of metal hydride particles. High energy charged particles entering the material are deflected repeatedly due to their interactions with the electromagnetic fields of the magnetic particles increasing the statistical probability of collisions with the surrounding hydrogen nuclei. Such repeated collisions dissipate the kinetic energy of the charged particles, leading to their increased effective absorption by the material. The material is also effective at attenuating secondary particles generated by collisions of the charged particles with atomic nuclei.
