Abstract

In the present disclosure an optical system and method for connecting an embedded optical fiber to an external connector comprised of another optical fiber is described. Such an optical system can be an embedded optical fiber inside a composite material shaft exiting the shaft from the end face. The optical fiber runs throughout the whole length of the shaft and both shaft end-faces are polished. One side acts as a visible light input plane and on the other side, a second, external optical fiber assembly embedded on a special end-fitting. This assembly is comprised of a microlens array whose functionality is to transmit light to and from the embedded optical fiber and transmit it with minimal losses to the external optical fiber.
