Πεδίο εφαρμογής Field of application
The invention refers to an integrated circuit which interfaces with a conventional photovoltaic (PV) element for the conversion of solar energy into electrical energy.
The present invention concerns a device whose main objective is to convert conventional PV elements into smart power generation units (Smart PV Elements, Figure 1). The advantages of the present invention are the maximization of the generated electricity produced by the PV element, the detection of faults, as well as the remote (via the Internet) control and monitoring of the operation of the Smart Photovoltaic Element. Figure 1 shows the structure of the intelligent integrated control circuit of the present invention and its interconnection with the PV element. According to the diagram, the intelligent integrated circuit of the present invention is a complete control and management system of the power generation of the PV element, and is characterized by autonomy in its operation.
The main feature of the smart integrated control circuit of the present invention is that it can be used by all manufacturers of conventional PV elements and in combination with any PV element manufacturing technology (e.g. multicrystalline, poly-crystalline, thin-film etc. ).
Η ενσωμάτωση του έξυπνου ολοκληρωμένου κυκλώματος ελέγχου της παρούσας εφεύρεσης στα Φ/Β στοιχεία μπορεί να προσφέρει τις παρακάτω λειτουργίες: The integration of the intelligent control integrated circuit of the present invention in the PV elements can provide the following functions:
1. Conversion of the generated voltage of the PV element, so that it adapts to the needs of both the overall PV installation and the technical specifications at the point of connection to the (autonomous) load or the electrical network. Therefore, it can produce both direct (DC) voltage and alternating (AC) voltage of appropriate (average/active) value, frequency, harmonic distortion, etc.
2. Continuous maximization of the power produced by the PV cell under the constantly changing conditions of solar radiation and ambient temperature.
3. Intelligent energy management, with the aim of controlling and adapting power production to the time-varying requirements of the electrical load (e.g. batteries, electrical network, etc.), or to a predetermined value (e.g. in Smart Grids applications) which is determined by the user of the PV installation via the user interface. It also ensures the ability to connect multiple Smart PV Elements in series and/or parallel, according to the technical requirements of the PV frame or array where these Smart PV Elements are integrated in each application, so as to achieve production balancing -electric power consumption, as well as to ensure the quality of the power supplied to the supplied electrical load.
4. Automatic detection and fault localization (fault detection and fault localization) in the individual Smart PV Elements of a PV array. The user has the ability to remotely (via the Internet) collect the information about the correct or incorrect operation of each Smart PV Element of the PV array through the user interface.
Περίγραφή του προβλήματος Description of the problem
The total capacity of Photovoltaic (PV) systems worldwide has increased in the last decade by more than 45 times. A conventional PV system is implemented by electrically connecting multiple PV elements in series and parallel, forming hierarchical PV strings, PV panels and PV arrays, respectively. An electronic DC-DC or DC-AC power converter is then used to transfer the output power of the PV array to the powered electrical load (eg battery bank) or to the grid, respectively. Today, the energy management of PV systems is done either centrally in arrays of PV panels, or at the level of groups of PV elements (solar cells in panels or strings) resulting in a significant reduction of the energy produced (e.g. to 6.4% in large PV parks, around 10% in PV systems installed in buildings etc.). These energy loss figures increase further depending on the topography and location of each PV installation. Also, with today's technology, failures of a PV system are only detected when a significant reduction in the energy produced is observed, leading to a reduction of up to 58% of the annual energy production.
At the same time, it has been established that power management at the level of a PV element increases the annual energy production of a PV system in conditions of uneven incidence of solar radiation (e.g. due to partial shading, deposition of impurities, etc.) and uneven electrical characteristics of the individual PVs B elements (conditions that appear in all PV systems) by 6.8 % - 29.7 %. However, although the importance of implementing PV systems with power processing/management capability at the PV element level has been internationally recognized, integrated PV systems with this capability have not been developed at a research and industrial level.
Το πλεονέκτημα της παρούσας εφεύρεσης έγκειται στο γεγονός ότι μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί σε συνδυασμό με οποιαδήποτε τεχνολογία κατασκευής Φ/Β στοιχείων (πχ. multicrystalline, thin-film κλπ.), μετατρέποντάς τα σε Έξυπνα Φ/Β Στοιχεία, με τα εξής πλεονεκτήματα σε σύγκριση με τα συμβατικά Φ/Β συστήματα που χρησιμοποιούνται σήμερα: The above analysis highlights the need for the development of Smart PV Elements, each of which consists of a conventional PV element connected to an intelligent integrated circuit of the present invention, which is responsible for maximizing and managing of the energy produced by the PV element, fault detection, as well as for remote (via the Internet) control and monitoring of the operation of the Smart PV Element. The advantage of the present invention lies in the fact that it can be used in combination with any manufacturing technology of PV elements (e.g. multicrystalline, thin-film, etc.), turning them into Smart PV Elements, with the following advantages compared to the conventional PV systems used today:
- συνεχή παραγωγή της μέγιστης δυνατής ισχύος από το Φ/Β σύστημα, μειώνοντας έτσι το κόστος ανά μονάδα παραγόμενης ενέργειας των Φ/Β συστημάτων, που αποτελεί στόχο της διεθνούς βιομηχανίας, - βέλτιστη αξιοποίηση των διαθέσιμων επιφανειών εγκατάστασης Φ/Β συστημάτων, - continuous production of the maximum possible power from the PV system, thus reducing the cost per unit of produced energy of PV systems, which is the goal of the international industry, - optimal utilization of the available installation surfaces of PV systems,
- δεν απαιτείται η χρήση ξεχωριστού ηλεκτρονικού μετατροπέα ισχύος (DC-DC ή DC-AC), μειώνοντας έτσι το κόστος του Φ/Β συστήματος και απλοποιώντας τη διαδικασία εγκατάστασης και συντήρησης του, - the use of a separate electronic power converter (DC-DC or DC-AC) is not required, thus reducing the cost of the PV system and simplifying its installation and maintenance process,
- μείωση του κόστους κατασκευής των Φ/Β πάνελς, καθώς η διαδικασία ταιριάσματος (matching) των επιμέρους Φ/Β στοιχείων που ενσωματώνονται στο ίδιο πάνελ δεν θα απαιτείται πλέον κατά την κατασκευή τους, - reducing the cost of manufacturing PV panels, as the matching process of the individual PV elements integrated into the same panel will no longer be required during their manufacture,
- reduction in PV system installation and maintenance costs due to the integration of fault detection and fault localization functions, as well as anti-theft protection and electric shock protection mechanisms within the integrated circuit (on-chip) of Smart PV of elements.

It controls and adjusts the power output of the integrated circuit to the requirements of the electrical load supplied with electricity (e.g. batteries, electrical network, etc.) or to a predetermined desired value (e.g. in Smart Grids applications), according to the electrical signals reference received from the Maximum Power Point Tracking unit (5). The power management subsystem ensures the quality of the power delivered to the powered electrical load. Also, it provides the possibility of electrical interconnection of multiple Smart PV Elements in series and/or parallel for the composition of Smart PV arrays (8), as shown in Figure 2, in order to balance the production-consumption of electric power through the supply of electric energy in a direct or alternating current electrical load or in the electrical network (14).

The integrated control and power management circuit of PV elements was analyzed theoretically and its operation was confirmed through simulations. It has been demonstrated that this system can turn conventional PV cells into smart power generation units (Smart PV Cells), achieving maximization and management of the energy produced by the PV cell, fault detection, as well as remote (via the Internet) control and monitoring of the operation of the Smart PV Element. It is emphasized that the increase in the energy efficiency of the PV system, which is achieved with the integrated circuit of the present invention, is energetically equivalent to the increase in the degree of efficiency of the PV elements, which, however, requires multi-year and expensive research efforts to achieve.
